That reminds me: Indian build small fire; stay close; keep warm. White man build big fire; keep far back; stay cold.

We built a moderate campfire not long ago when it was 95 degrees for the high that day. Smores don't cook themselves! I'm not running a fire for too long when it is that hot out.

I just came back from a weeklong trip where temps were mid 90's every day and we had a fire every evening with fans on us. When it's my wood I will burn it when I choose. You burn yours when you choose. I keep seeing this issue come up and wonder why anyone cares what others do as long as it does not infringe on others fun

Yep some like a fire, some love it and some sit inside. I sit around a fire talking to the family and wonder why people sit inside watching the boob tube listening to the AC rumble. Those inside look out and say look at that idiot with a fire. It is called personal preference.

that was me on my last beach trip. SO HOT outside yet kiddo invited about 6 new girlfriends over to the site for a 'Smores Party'. I looked at hubby and said go buy one bundle of wood from the camp store!
Yup we had a big HOT fire and ran in, toasted a bit, ran away, ran in toasted a bit and backed off. 90s and fire are a bad combo but with smores we sure made sure everyone had a great time.
There are tons of reasons people have fires in hot weather. Some do use it for cooking.

Having a fire, even a tiny one is part of the camping experience. With the fire ban this last trip we finally set out the grill for a bit of warmth while we watched the sun set. We decided it was nice twisting the knob and having it go out so we are getting a Campfire in a can for next time.

We like a campfire on a chilly night, otherwise we don't bother. But then we live in an area where we can have a campfire every night if we wanted one. It's no big thrill to us. My husband just gave up the briquette grill for a gas grill. He doesn't even want to mess with getting them started anymore. He made some great steaks on the gas grill last night.

The version I remember is slightly different
Indian build small fire, keep warm by fire
White man build big fire, keep warm hauling wood.
