These type of things go on everyday on just about any type of forum . Also to private e-mails. That's why most e-mail accounts have a SPAM folder. These e-mails only prey on the people who are stupid enough to give out their private information.
Think about it,, if they already had this info, why on earth would they e-mail you and ask for it?
As far as the clowns or joking? RV people in general like to have fun and I for one joke with others who think life is to short to walk around with your head up in the clouds. I have a 40yr old son who's a total quad with no movement at all that the DW and I care for full time and Trust me, I know how to be serious !! If I can still joke and have fun, so can you. We try to keep the forum fun as well as informative.
With the members we have,, seems like it's working pretty darn well to me?

But everybody has their opinion, so I thought I'd share mine.

They are going to need to change the sign up form for this forum and use one of those squewed security "read this and type it box" to prevent the automated scarfing of all our email address' and patch the hole that is already there.
I don't believe that anyone got an email from someone who "lifted" their email address from this forum. There is a big difference between email and private messages. The only things one needs to send a private message is to be a registered member, have the member name to which you want to send a private message, and that member not be blocking all private messages. You're not suggesting that we encrypt usernames so that no one knows who made what post, are you?
Email addresses, along with other personal information, are encrypted and are not displayed anywhere by the forum software.

Tom,
Please don't take this post personally. Companies with far more sophisticated security systems and very highly trained IT personnel have had thier systems invaded and data stolen. Included among them; the Pentagon, VISA, Google, and most recently LinkeIn. So while your "I don't believe...." is given in all sincerety it is, however remote not beyond possibility.
My previous comment remains.......the Forum needs better security and should begin now to implement it.

Neither you nor I know what security this forum is using. The issue in this thread is one of private messages, not email addresses. If you expect this forum to implement security at the level of the Pentagon, then you will be disappointed.

Sorry Tom I was wrong on this, you are absolutely right, they can't get our personal email. Although after this latest automated hit perhaps they can?
It had to be an "automated spam" technique 'within' the forum. There is no way some guy would sit on the forum and scroll thru and manually send 1 message 5 times to each forum member's private messages.
And while we have your attention. All the forums and clubs I belong to do NOT allow any working urls, links, dotcoms to be included in their signature. It is nothing more than a quick way to get traffic for profit. Join RVnet and post your url under you signature. Talk about the number of hits. It's an old trick to join clubs that allow this for traffic to a site.
Heck I could post my website under cover in my signature and most definitely make a thousand dollars the first week. Forum rules say no advertising so "I" don't. Many do and IMHO this needs to be looked at also.

Rats! I missed a chance for $18 million cause I could not check my PM's since my computer has been down because of an infection with DNS changer malware. What a bummer!
Do you think the offer still stands, if I email him?

This is one of the cleanest and nicest forums on the internet. Because they DO have a good system in place. How would you like to go to your favorite hobby forum and have filthy posts and advertising etc. to filter thru? That's pretty common for the smaller less financed forums and groups that don't have a good webmaster and safe surfing plan in place.
That stuff doesn't happen here. An automated spammer has figured a way to do it here and I'm sure they will get to the bottom of it. I for one don't want to have to shut down my private messages because of some jerk.

Quite frankly, I agree that this Forum is run efficiently but I get a little taken back by comments about DNA and genes just because someone has a sense of humor No matter how serious the threat may be! As Ive been around this Forum for a good bit of time, this is the first such incident that Im aware of where Private Messages have been utilized in a such a manner. That in itself tells me someone has been watching out on our behalf.
Oh...I got the same message myself this morning so I guess that means Im in the same boat as the rest although I only had one such message.
