Why is it that on some websites the back button will not take you back to the previous page? You hit the back button and the page stays the same. When I hit the little downward pointing arrow in the lefthand corner of the screen(where the back button is) and it shows the previous few pages, the only thing that shows is the current page(listed a bunch of times). I have to go to 'history' or type in the previous page web address to get off of the current page. Anybody understand my question? Don't know all the computer lingo to explain it any other way. Gary

If you have some ad blocking going on in your browser each ad that it does not load is a separate backup page. If you blocked three ads you have to backup four times to get to the previous page.
The down arrow selections will get you back, select the lowest one. You may have to do it more than once.

A browser is a program one uses to "browse" (view) Internet pages. Internet Explorer is a "browser." So is FireFox, Chrome, Safari, and some others.
The reason for my question is that different browsers have exhibited this behavior of different reasons. For example, it was not uncommon on Internet Explore 8 running under Vista (a Microsoft Windows operating system.) It was a common problem with early releases of Chrome 14.
garym114's idea is a good possibility. However, I'm concerned that if you don't know what a "browser" is, what do you know about setting up ad blockers. Did someone else set up your computer?
Is this something that has recently started to happen? Or, is it something that has always happened on this computer.
Other things that can cause the Back button to seem not to work include,
If clicking on a link opens a new window or tab, the Back button will not work in that window or tab.
If the link you click on opens a page that is redirected to another page, then the back button will back up one page, but be immediately redirected back to the second page. (Quickly clicking the Back button twice will usually get past this one.)
A third possibility is a malicious script being executed to prevent you leaving a page.

It has to do with advertising.
Usually most browsers when you right click and hit back it usually works better than the button.

Tom, I think my wife put some type of an ad blocker on-she knows a little more about computers than I do, but not a whole lot. I do know about the new tab or page. It has done it for a while, usually I just pull down the recent pages and there were 1 or 2 ads or the same pages that I just jumped over to get to the last page. In the last couple weeks there may have been 10 or 20 though. That's when I go into the history to get back to the original page. It's not a big problem, I just wondered what was going on. I kind of guessed that it had something to do with some type of ad. Oh, I think this is 'vista'. Well time for bed. Thanks everyone for the replies. Maybe someday I'll take a computer course to find out what I'm doing on here. Gary
