X 2 and well worth the $20. Sorry, but we used that coupon. There is a city CG right next to the parking lot for it that we dry camped in. North of downtown is a free dump station and water fill plus several other $15 city CGs on the water.
No need of reservations except on weekends so I'd say you are over planning your trip. The beauty of a MH is you do not need hookups and there are plenty of dump stations... most for free. Many gas stations have free dump and water.

You might try cheating and look at the itinerary for Adventure Caravans tour of Alaska. The Howens have a good video out of their trip to Alaska.

Figure an average speed of 45 mph on the "highways" and take your time. Mosquitos are in decline. Yea! We flew to Katmai for bear viewing with Homer Air out of Homer and had blast! Take a lightweight camp chair to sit on. Slow walking, no race horsing. We also took Major Marine's Kenai Fjords all-day cruise. Hubby can sit inside in comfort while you bounce around the railing taking pictures. Excellent food and Iceberg margaritas, too! The road in Denali is all torn up and will be 'til next year they say. They're repairing frost heaves and putting in new drainage. Rough ride no matter how you go. We went all the way to Kantishna and won't do that again. Going as far as Wonder lake isn't much shorter. Maybe go to Eielson VC? Great view of McKinley if out.
Have fun and congrats on 25 years!

After restocking in Anchorage you might want to just drive as far as Palmer for your first night. The RV parks are nicer up there. We would also recommend that in Denali just take the shuttle bus tour to Eielson Visitor Center. That, in itself, is a long day. The drive to Wonder Lake isn't the prettiest part - it's before Eielson! You'll want to spend some time at the Visitor Center, too. It has some good displays and a prime view of "The Mountain" if it's showing that day. Also, Wonder Lake is the place for mosquitos!! Talkeetna is the place to book the flight trip for hubby. If you're short on time and can't do both, we would choose Seward over Homer. We love them both but Seward has a little more to offer. The city park is a wonderful place to stay. It's right on the water and you'll have otters and other critters right outside your window along with gorgeous views. It sounds like a great trip! Congratulations.

Take ear plugs. Ship Creek RV park is right next to a railroad track in a sort of industrial area and you'll be hearing lots of rumbling and whistles during the night.

Try to avoid driving to/from Homer on a weekend -- lots of traffic.

Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood allows boondocking in their parking lot for $10/night -- an option for travelers going to/from the Kenai who wish to avoid staying in Anchorage.

It was reported in a thread here a while back that the highway down to Seward was undergoing major reconstruction this year and lengthy delays are possible, so you may want to check the status of that before venturing down there if you're on a tight schedule.

does anyone have a suggestion on where to stay in Talkeetna area? I'm thinking we'll cut up the drive from Denali to Seward with a stay somewhere on the way back.. Thanks in advance!

There's a couple of RV parks in town, but if you don't mind boondocking there's a nice wide open flat area on the east side of the road as you're coming into Talkeetna, a quarter mile or so before you get to the overlook where the highway drops down into town. Good view of Denali/McKinley from the overlook if the sky is clear, BTW. Don't miss the ranger station, which has an excellent movie about climbing McKinley. It's at the far end of town, near the river, and a block west of the main street.

Search "10 top places to see Mt. McKinley" in case you don't see it in the park and a nice day allows it to show off. One is at Earthquake park in Anchorage north of the airport, as I recall.
Safe travels!

Following up on Oldtymr's post, if you happen to catch McKinley on a bad day adn can't see it while at the park, I've almost always been able to see the mountain on the drive in to Talkeetna. There is a spot 1-2 miles outside of town on the spur where you can get a great view of McKinley. There's a pull-out/parking area there as well.

There are a couple of RV parks in the Talkeetna area, but the names escape me for now. The ranger station is a great place to get a sense of McKinley. "Downtown" Talkeetna is fun to walk around. If one is so inclined, one can do a bit of a rustic "Pub crawl" in Talkeetna during the summer.

Having done the pub crawl back in the day and in the winter, it's a bit of a different experience.
