hang on - there are no showers or hookups at Eagle River? I was looking for something that had hookups so in case we had any issues/questions/problems we could ask at Great Alaskan the next day... So is Golden Nugget really horrible? worse than Ship Creek?

We stayed at the Golden Nugget last year. DW and I were very happy there. We didn't have any problems maneuvering and parking the 33ft 5er we had at the time. There was even a bunch of 40+ foot motor coaches there and they didn't have any problems. There is a Costco right across the street and a Sam's just a short drive.

You are correct about Eagle River having no hookups. Most of the state/gov't campgrounds in AK are dry. But Eagle River - the campground and town - are amazing, and SOOOO much easier to navigate than Anchorage. GAH has a pretty stellar reputation, so I don't think they would rent you a rig with issues. Or did you mean you might have issues operating the rig?
If you have to stay in town, I would suggest Golden Nugget over Ship Creek. You will be closer to groceries at Golden Nugget, so you can stock up, and the train is a ways away. Neither campground is in the best part of town, but you will be safe at either.

Great Alaskan's motorhomes are well-maintained and not older than 1 year old so it is very unlikely that you'll have problems with the unit.
Now, if you just have questions about how things work (ie you forgot something from the orientation), you can call them up and they'll walk you thru it. There is also a very detailed set of written instructions/manuals that come with the rental (or at least they did last time I rented from them last summer)
And the vast majority of the people you'll meet at the campground are likely to help you too. Most of them are a pretty friendly bunch

Simply from a "nicer experience" point of view, Eagle River or Palmer will be nicer than staying in Los Anchorage. If you really need hookups, Golden Nugget is not located at the best of Anchorage, but it is better than Ship Creek.
I would second that most people at any campground would likely help you...or you can just post a "help" on this forum and you'll probably get a lot of offers to help, possibly from forum members that are also in the Los Anchorage area.
