We are traveling with some friends, have reservations in Pagosa Spgs, Gunnison, and Aspen. Friends are leaving us after Aspen, which will be on 8/29. We have about 3 more weeks before we need to be home. Having visited Yellowstone, the Tetons, and Glacier, does anyone have any other suggestions in Wyoming, Montana, or perhaps Idaho. Have been to Sun Valley, Stanley, and Couer d'Alene. We love Forest Service Campgrounds, but know that most in these areas close after Labor Day. If you know of any great FS CG's that stay open longer or any private CG's that you think are great, we would appreciate the input. DH loves to play golf and fly-fish! Thanks!

We love the Cashe de Poudre River along Hwy. 14 between Walden and Ft. Collins.
There are a number of Nat'l Forest and a few private campgrounds along the highway.

If you are in Aspen then Independent Pass is a must see. One of the most scenic rides that we have ever taken was the Beartooth Parkway which is out the NE side of Yellowstone.

We love the Medicine Bow National Forest in southern Wyoming. The scenery is breathtaking.

You might try the Granby/Shadow Mountain Lake area. Also might look at Walden area and the Medicine Bow range of wyoming. Enjoy you stay here!

I went to Aspen for a weekend and stayed there for three years (just out of college). IIRC, early September is high season for the fall colors. I would take the advice of previous posters and glue myself to Independence Pass. If you hit the trees turning right, you will never forget the experience.

Howdy!
Have you considered South Dakota. Lots to see and do in the southeastern part of South Dakota. We will be headed to SD after the biker crowd clears out after Sturgis Rally mid August.

The upper part of the caynon is fine but the High Park fire has changed some of the scenery in the lower part (below Rustic). And every heavy rain turns the river black and dirty and may close the road from mud slides. Just be aware
