This is one of those situations that is frustrating for your vets as well as you. In all likelyhood this is not a serious problem, but it could be serious.

What do you do?

If you wait and watch or treat symptomatically without a diagnosis you run the risk of a serious problem becoming more serious.

You might choose to work it up and spend mega bucks and find nothing...

This is a situation where communication with your vet is most important.

Doug, DVM

Very true, Dr. Doug.

I spoke with our vet this afternoon when she called checking on us and I shared with her that Blanca was still symptomatic this morning... and she is this evening as well. I came home from work hoping it had stopped, but it hasn't.

I tried to describe it before but it's difficult to describe unless you see & feel it happen. At this point it's the same as yesterday, instead of an actual hiccup it's more like a slight swallowing response. Almost as if there might be a tiny particle of food in her throat. It happens every minute or two typically but sometimes more often. Unlike on Sunday when you could see her stomach move in conjunction with the throat movement, more like a hiccup then it is now.

It certainly is puzzling... whatever it is.

Hey Cat, get your phone or camera out and make a video. That's really helpful in these situations where there are intermittent symptoms.

Good idea Dr. Doug! I'll try it... it's such a subtle movement it's hard to see on her little black self, but I'll try.

Cat, does she make any unusual noises with it? I had a cat years ago that would appear to have hiccups intermittently. Then it advanced to looking like a hairball she could get up. They put her on enzymes to no avail. She eventually began to have wheezing and coughing with it. Before she passed they were beginning to work her up for some sort of mass around her heart (seen on xray), she passed before further eval. I am not saying this is what is going on, just telling you what my 9yr cat did in her last year here on earth. Never did know what it was or how to help her. Hope you find her some relief soon.

When her hiccups were more pronounced on Sunday there was a tiny noise with them, almost like a chirp sound, not exactly a hiccup noise but a tiny chirp. Of course, we also call Miss Blanca "me-me kitty" because she can make the tiniest meows so the chirping noise isn't all that unusual, except this was accompanied by the hiccups.

I tried to get a video of it a couple of times... so far no luck with the symptom showing up on camera. It's such a tiny movement even with bright light it's not visible with our camera(s) on her black body. It did add a bit of comic relief with the way she was looking at me all puzzled as if to say "What in the world are you trying to do? You want me to lay where? How? Why?" and finally "I've had enough." and off she went with her tail twitching to hide under the bed.

Thanks for the ideas & suggestions... keep them coming!

It hasn't stopped... matter of fact this morning it seemed worse, again. I just know this had to be bugging her even more than it bothers me. Can you imagine having something like the hiccups (on & off) for four days?

I am taking her in today for a second opinion. We have a feline specialty vet in town and we will be going to see him this afternoon. I've seen him twice in the past, but not with Blanca.

We have the "last appointment of the day". The receptionist who called me back, after speaking to the vet, said "He wants to see you today if you can make it in by 5:30." I'm not sure whether to worry more or just be grateful we were worked in today.

Time will tell.......
