I don't know anything about a "straight talk" phone, but to successfully teather a phone to a laptop you'll need access to the internet on the phone. If the phone doesn't have internet, you can't get the net on your laptop by connecting it to your phone.
At one time you could contact a internet provider thru a phone number but I think those service providers are all gone.

You can access the internet with Straight Talk but, at least on my phone, it's slower than molasses in January. And, to my knowledge, you can't tether.
Nonetheless, I save a LOT of money using ST instead of my former carrier, Verizon, and find I can access enough WiFi connections to get on the internet as often as I need to while traveling. If I were to go full time again, I'd probably go back to Verizon and get the full package.
