I just picked up a 98 Fourwinds Funmover on the E Super Duty platform. It has 41K miles on it and the prior owner gave me all the receipts. After going through the receipts I was shocked to discover the problems he had.
First the sparkplugs, he had one blow out. Do I have nine ticking time bombs on my hands?
Second, he had to replace the transmission at 36K miles. It has the four speed automatic, are these reliable? The current transmission shifts nice and the fluid looks like new.
Third, the speedometer reads 100 mph when you are stopped, but goes down to about 80 on on the highway. The mechanical odometer works fine. Any ideas on the problem?

He may have been one of those guys that the repair shops take advantage of, and easily talked into the "dire consequences" if he didn't get something replaced/repaired.
The early 1998 6.8 V-10's were netorius for blowing out spark plugs (easily fixed with a "heli coil") but issues were were fixed as soon as Ford found it to be an issue during early production. And often for tranny issues due to the huge torque 550 lbs of torque this engine has. Plus sometimes the manifold bolts were stretching.
41,000 miles is really nothing for this engine, which commonly has an average of 168,000 mi on it at the age of yours!
My posts shouldn't be taken for factual data. They are purely fictional, for entertainment purposes and should not be constituted as actually related to scientific, technical, engineering, legal, spiritual or practical advice. Amen.
Just in case you did not know, "E-Super Duty" is the forerunner of E450. Ford had a litle "branding" issue back then. Anyhow, the GVWR on the doorpost should show as 14050 pounds. Good chassis.
