So the Camping History thread got me thinking....

Why do you camp.... What inspires/compels you to go camping? And why do you choose a truck camper over a TT, 5er or MH?

For me, it started as needing somewhere to sleep on multi-day trail rides in my off road truck. It started in tents and the first time we got snowed on we bought an old $500 TC as a dry place to sleep while still being able to pull the truck/trailer. That's why we're into TCs. Added bonus is the ability to camp pretty much wherever I can park my pickup.

Since having my first daughter last year we've started camping for the sake of camping, because some of my fondest memories growing up were camping with my mom and dad in the 80s, and I want to continue that tradition and make those memories with my wife and daughter.

Getting out into the woods away from it all (even though I live on a farm and only have a couple neighbors within a half mile in any direction) brings back those memories of my childhood. Also, getting away from the farm chores and technology is some of the best relaxation I can get.

Had the truck,

Needed a place to sleep other than a tent.

Whatever I got had to be able to tow my Jeep/trailer.

After spending a freezing night in the back of my truck under a shell I had coffee in SheepCamp's 845 and I was sold.

I also have many memories of camping with my parents. When I go now with my wife and boys (8 & 13) we are either boating, 4wheeling or riding motorcycles so we tow one of three different trailer setups. Granted we could tow with a class C. However a 4x4 diesel class C is out of the budget range so TC it is.

We're basically tent campers who got lazy. A basic popup TC is working out really well for us.

We don't like towing. We needed (okay, wanted) a truck anyway. We found we could fit us and the kids in a camper. It's a step and a half up from a tent but it's so darn easy to drive and park and setup.

We do basic forest service campground type stuff and it's nice to get into the tent spaces.

I wanted a TC to pull a trailer. I had the truck to pull the trailer. I've had TT and Class A. TC is just right with no kids at home now. I hunt/fish/camp/sight see/see relatives.

TC is much beter for traveling.

We are primative,,no pay sites when we go ride our OHVs. We can park in a small space, basically "camp" to stay outdoors unless we sleep or encounter rain, and leave "home" behind. Its as outdoors as it gets and still have some creature comforts. Good topic as so many of us have different opinions on why we upgrade from tents and why we go to the extremes we do. I wish I could hear from the "bus people" or the triple axle croud.

We were tenters for years, with a 1999 f-150,my father got too old so we swapped trucks,he got the half ton,i got his 1995 dually,he doesnt pull his fifth wheel anymore, lives in it at a really nice rv park. After useing the dually as a daily driver i thought lets get a truck camper, glad we did,so easy to set up take down etc. There is only the two of us and we love it,not without the odd problem but I cant see myself in a class c.The only sad thing is my father would need a special licsence to pull his big montana fiver and he doesnt feel confident any more,,and he is the reason i love camping, sucks getting old dad),thanks for the truck and the camper dad!!

I was introduced to truck camping through a friend and his family on a weekend camping trip in High School, but my interest started on a trip with my Dad and Brother to Yosemite and seeing those kids looking out the cabover window enjoying the view was what made me want to get a truck camper. I love getting into the outdoors whenever I can, a truck camper makes it easier for me to do so, plus I like that fact that I can fit in places that a motorhome, or trailers can't go.

I wanted a truck camper because I ride horses, I looked at living quarters horse trailers and as nice as they and the multi use they could provide me, I also didn't wanna tow my horse trailer to just camp or tow the camper just to move horses. So I settled for a truck camper and a bumper pull horse trailer, use both at once or separate

Now to just get the extension hitch for the new truck camper combo

pretty much the same. I have no use for a large Class A. I am too damn antisocial to want to hang out in trailer parks. RV's the size of the Cruise Americas are just not my cup of tea either. I had the truck and the horse trailer, the wife wanted to be able to stay on the grounds of horse shows and I wanted a base for mt Biking and fly fishing...A TC was/is the perfect solution for us.
