Ford prints 5W-40 right on the oil fill cap and is listed in the Diesel Supplement Manual. 5W-40 is always a synthetic oil so I'm calling BS on the dealer.

Also Ford recommends to follow the OLM to determine when it's time to perform an oil change. I decided I'm going to go with 6k mile OCI which should be before the OLM tells me to change my oil and I will use Rotella 5W-40 synthetic oil.

Good info!

If I can afford your 6.7, I'd be putting synthetic in it too.

Hope you are enjoying the ride.

On my 2012, which so far as I know is the same as the 2011, the truck will persistently -insist- on an oil change with repeating messages to the message panel. Hard to ignore after awhile. Mine started just before 8K.

And I saw a message here where someone had a problem with Ford when they could not show that they had changed the oil at proper intervals. Keep the receipts.

Its easy to ignore - just reset it. Message goes away until next time. My problem is that I forget how many times I've reset it.

I am sure that the rather demanding Ford 6.7 will remember how often the oil is changed, as the oil chemistries break down as their safety margin is exceeded.

Failure Development Period
The failure development period can vary considerably for these contaminants. Most sudden-death failures from moderate levels of contamination will usually have one or more aggravating factors (the combo effect). Conversely, massive concentrations of one or more of these contaminants can result in sudden-death failures unaided by an aggravating circumstance. There are dozens of other aggravating factors that can drastically shorten the failure development period as well. More typical is when a moderate problem goes unnoticed and develops over time.

Soot

Soot is a by-product of combustion and exists in all in-service diesel engine motor oils. It reaches the engine by various means of blow-by during engine operation. While the presence of soot is normal and expected for a given number of miles or hours of service on an engine oil, the concentration and state of soot may be abnormal, signaling a problem with the engine and/or a need for an oil change. Following are some issues related to soot contamination:

Combustion efficiency is directly related to the soot generation rate. Poor ignition timing, restricted air filter and excessive ring clearance cause high soot load. Combustion problems are not solved by an oil change.

New diesel engines designed for lower emissions have higher injection pressures. This corresponds to increased sensitivity to abrasive wear (for example, from soot) between rocker, shaft and rocker bearing and can lead to rocker arm seizure. New exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) units on diesel engines amplify the amount and abrasivity of soot production.

Viscosity increases with soot load. However, high dispersancy associated with some modern engine oils may increase viscosity with soot even more. High viscosity corresponds to cold-start problems and risk of oil starvation.

Soot and sludge in engines deposit or separate from the oil in the following areas, all presenting risks to engine reliability including rocker boxes, valve covers, oil pans and head deck.

Deposits on engine surfaces interfere with combustion efficiency and fuel/oil economy.

Soot polishes off protective antiwear soap films in boundary zones such as cam and cam-follower zones.

Carbon jacking from the buildup of soot and sludge behind piston rings in grooves can cause rapid wear of rings and cylinder walls. This can cause broken or severely damaged rings during cold-start conditions.

Then water, glycol, fuel dilution damage...

News... Thanks

BTW it's a great truck and the power and fuel ecomony is impressive.

Yes, I am looking forward to the next iteration (minor facelift) of the Ford 6.7 in 2013? model year to meet the next rung of EPA regs.

They are suppose to tune it for even better fuel economy.

The gossip is a more tuned / advanced smog system is coming that will do the job cheaper and last longer, but not before 2015.

I still don't understand why they did not go with a electrically cleaned DPF with fuel heating only as a back up, though I understand it needs a bigger alternator.

For the long suffering diesel crowd... yea, there are technical improvements coming ... and in time, things will get a lot better.

BTW, get the software in the Ford Sync updated each time you visit the dealer.

Gossip is that the software is in need of lots of bug fixes --- though it doesn't affect driveability, it is annoying to have Microsoft bugs.

Regards!

FWIW, I see no TSBs recommending a different oil than is in the manual, nor do I see anything that would suggest synthetics are NOT recommended. Unless the dealer can provide documentation from Ford stating as such, I'm sending the BS flag up the pole.

If you plan on changing the oil according to the oil life monitor, I can't see why anyone would waste thier money on synthetic oil. I use synthetic but would rather spend money on getting a periodic oil analysis performed and chanfe accordingly. The oil analysis should give you a warning of what could end up being a serious problem. (water or fuel in the oil )

My wifes caddy seems to go about 10k before the reminder comes on, if i dont see mine at 7500miles i will change it. I have been using regular dino oild since day one in the truck.

ford wants ford oil in it and the maint. performed when they say so becouse of all the problems they have been having. i would play along at least until the warrenty is up. waaaaayyyyy cheaper then repairing the broken engine yourself. dont give them a way out of paying.
