Got a line on an upscale 98 Cummins CTD (has power leather seats).

Just how noisy are these things on the road with the windows up? I had a 99 Suburban 6.5 and it wasn't loud (while on the road) at all.

I understand I will have to turn off the truck going through drive throughs. I'm just concerned about noise while going down the road.

Well my 01 24 valve is noisy with the windows down, but not bad with them up. I also shut down at drive ups and always stay a truck length back of the person being served when in line.
If it is an SLT Laramie it will likely have a noise reduction package, extra insulation.

My fathers 01 is surprisingly quiet inside the cab. The aftermarket air filter makes for more turbo noise than engine rattle inside the cab.

Its about as loud as my 7.3 is or my sons 2002 5.9. Loud out side not so bad inside. Not sure what the DB rating would be. I like the sound of these older diesels. Exhaust setups can add to or quite some of the noise. I have a MBRP on my 97 and my son had stock with Walker muffler. The both sound about the same to me loudness wise. In either of out trucks if we turn the radio to vol 8 or higher you can hear music clearly. His Dodge is a Work Truck No carpet and just basic everything. I think the sound would compare well with a GM 6.5. Lots of good soundproofing stuff out there where you cut the sound quite a bit. Dynamat is just one.

The 5.9L is music to most people’s ears. It is a symbol of honesty and integrity.

My 7.3 and 6.0 XL trim level vehicles are very loud outside but tolerable inside. I have a good stereo in the 7.3 truck that drowns out the engine just fine.
