We are planning to make a trip to Utah in September and have never visited this part of the country so would like advice from our forum friends on things to see and good places to camp. We will stay at least ten or twelve days and prefer to move only two or three times at the most. We don't care for KOA type campgrounds, preferring natural settings. Thanks so much for any help you can give us.
YOu'll love it - camp in Canyonlands NP, plenty of no HU areas. Also one state park with electric.
Fill up on fuel before you head in = no station inside park. Stay at upper canyonlands, then switch to lower canyonlands and camp in each one - don't try to camp and drive to the other one and back.
You should arrive EARLY if you want to camp Arches - or no sites if you go in good weather times ...

Been to Moab once, October 2011, and stayed at Portal RV Park. http://www.portalrvresort.com/ Short drives to get to most all attractions. We visited Shaffer Trail, Canyonlands, Arches, etc. Beautiful part of the country. Enjoy.
From your question, can I assume you're talking specifically about Canyonlands National Park and not just the "canyonlands" area in general? If you are wanting to visit the other parks, you might expand on where specifically you are wanting to go.
For visiting the Island in the Sky part of Canyonlands NP, Dead Horse Point is your best option. But you have to haul your water up. There is a dump station there.
For the Needles District, Squaw Flat CG in the park is a good bet. There are nice bathrooms there now, as well as a water system. Many of the sites are quite long.
You will find it fairly busy in September as the weather is starting to moderate by then.

We went to Moab this April and really loved the area. The campground we stayed at was a little smaller, but it was not on the main road (read major truck route) like almost all of the others. Price was competitive and it was nice and clean. Didn't have lots of amenities, but the bathrooms, showers, and laundry area was clean. Not too far out of town. OK RV Park

Just got it and learning about it as we go!
Excellent "natural" campgrounds for Moab area is Arches Nat'l Park and Dead Horse Point State Park in Canyonlands. Then you could take in Bryce Nat'l Park which has a campground or down the road from Bryce is Red Canyon forest service campground which is in a beautiful setting. Then if you want to do Zion National Park Watchman campground in the park is very nice. There are many other great southern Utah areas to check out, too. Since you stated you like "natural" campgrounds all the national parks have nice ones in a prime setting! Have a good trip.
