We are heading to the Porky's in the UP next week. We plan on "winging it" (no reservations) and can boon-dock. We will be there Monday thru Thursday. Pulling a 25'- 5'r with a big full size Ford crew cab. There are many NF-CG that don't take reservations. We hike, Mtn. bike, and fish.
Any suggestions?
Also any good diesel shops, in case we have issues? A month ago, last trip to SD-Black Hills had a break down and replaced some fuel injectors and module for fuel system. Rapid City Diesel was fantastic! They have experieced Tech's for all Makes even "pushers" and seem like a quality shop!
Porky's is one of my favorite places to camp and backpack. There is a great rustic State Park on the west end of the Porcupine Mountains called "Presque Isle Unit CG" located along Lake Superior with nice large sites. The area offers miles of hiking trails, streams, waterfalls, no cell phone reception, and a lot of "piece & quiet". Not unusual for an occasional black bear to roam thru the CG either.
The campground has two hand pumps for filling water jugs, and vault toilets (no dump station). The paved road leading to the CG is 16 miles long and only few homes during the first mile or two. My campsite (#9) backed up to the bluffs of Lake Superior which was great for my rear living room floorplan.
I didn't make any reservations when I went and still had a great selection of sites to choose from. If you do make reservations, I recommend the following sites: #2 (best bluffs), #4 (bluffs), #9 (bluffs, shown in pic), #8 (lake view). If you want a private site then go for #36.
If you decide to go to the Union Bay State Park Campground (crowded) on the East side of the Porky's, sites I recommend: #25 (on lake), #18 (on lake), #32 (nice private site), #57 (shade), #63 (shade), #36, and #59 (shade), and #33 (private site).
I got back this past weekend from there. Was at Union CG the 21st, and McLain SP for 3 nights following that. Both are pleasant, but the word that kept coming to mind while at McLain was "paradise." I even lucked into a shore-side campsite for one night. What a nice place.
