OK just a short brief story, my parents have decided to sell there Duramax and go with a newer Dodge 3500 with the diesel. They are looking for a 2003-07 and need to know what types of problems if any with those years. They owned a 12 valve at one point and loved it. The duramax has way..way many miles now (a few hundred thousand) and with an upcoming trip in the fall they need a newer truck..
Thanks,
Kris

The '03-early '07 5.9 in my opinion is the best motor that Cummins made. Strong and very reliable.

Lift pump in the '03-'04 could be a problem because it was under the hood. Once moved into the fuel tank the problem went away. Mine failed with around 100k on the clock.
My '03 was the mist trouble free vehicle I've ever had. My '12 looks to be following in its footsteps.

My '06 has had a few minor problems in just over 90k miles. Recirculating air door broke, replaced blower fan, #4 fuel line broke. If you get one without the exhaust brake, you should consider getting an aftermarket exhaust brake. Get the kit from a Cummins dealer instead of a Dodge dealer - much cheaper that way.
