One of the things you needed to have was a valid SS card. I lost mine years ago so I went down to the SS office to get one. The first thing they asked me for was my drivers license. I showed them mine and the gal said "I can't accept this, it's expired". I said it expired less than 30 days ago and she said "you must have a valid license to get your card".
I then asked her how was I to get a valid license without a SS card? She couldn't tell me. I asked for her manager. He said any valid government picture ID would work. I then tried to get a "valid government picture ID card". Guess what? You need a valid SS card to get one unless you don't have a SS#. I lied and tried to say I didn't have a SS# but their computer always found out I did. So why can't the DMV look it up too?
I then called my lawyer. He said to have the SS office give me a paper stating I had a SS# but couldn't get a card without a valid license and take it to the DMV. It took 2 hr's of arguing with the SS office and talking to 3 different people to get the paper.
At the DMV they told me no go. A valid SS card was needed not a piece of paper. I told them to look it up on their computer but no, they wouldn't. After waiting hr's and talking to 4 different people they couldn't give me an answer as to how I could get a license without a SS card.
I'm 60 years old, had a DL since I was 16, fought in Nam, have had 3 businesses, have a voters R. card, Tax returns, birth certificate, truck registration, motorcycle registration, divorce papers, deed to my home and a pile of proof I am who I am and I get this crap? This is the new America?
Anyone have any ideas?

.... cut the OP a break. He served in Nam for THIS country. All he wants is what to do next to get his D/L. Your comment was not helpful to him at all.
Similar story for my DH in 2010 when we went back to SD to renew... You don't know your SS card is missing until you can't find it. Besides, we were RENEWING our SD D/L. Oh well. We had enough documentation to get PASSPORTS and then go in for the D/L. Just took more time and money.
I never got any notice in the mail about my license expiring. I had a change of address done online 2 years ago and thought it was good for 6 years. I don't have a passport, never did. Thanks Bob for the advice to go to my state representative's office. I just might do that since getting a passport would take time. The DMV would not accept my tax forms because they were hand written.
And thanks Kathy and Scott for the kind words.

My Social Security card states clearly at the bottom "For Social Security and Tax Purposes - Not for Identification."
However, according to The Florida DMV, they will accept a Federal Tax form 1099 as proof of your SS#.
Print out the page and take it with you, along with your 1099. Prepare to ask for the name of anybody that says they still can't help you, write it down, and ask to speak to their supervisor. Eventually, you will talk to someone who asks why you're coming to them. That's the time to show them the list of people that said they couldn't help you.
You can't make you-know-what flow uphill, but it will flow downhill.
Be prepared to pass all documentation on to a newspaper reporter of your choice as a last resort. They'd probably love a story like this.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.
Florida's driver license and Id card requirements are STUPID. My mother who is 96 and born at home does not have a birth certificate. What a run around to get them to except her baptism record in place of her birth certificate. She could not renew by mail but had to appear with all these papers. We also have a friend down there had to get a register copy of her marriage certificate even throw she was divorced for years.
You have to show all kind of proof to get your drivers license but almost no paper work to draw welfare.
We also do not have a SS card since I was in the military, back then they were taken and destroyed since your SS number was your Id number for all paper work but the state of Florida will not accept my ID as proof, I asked when my mother got a Florida Id card. It's still on my permanent ID but they have started to drop it off the dependent cards.
Thanks for the service of course, but serving in Vietnam has nothing to do with this issue. Are you retired? Have a retiree I'd card? A VA disability card? As others mentioned, there are other documents that floridas website will accept. We lost my daughters SS card a few years ago and we needed it for something. If I remember correctly, they accepted school records. Also, you can get a replacement social security card without a drivers license or other government ID. Do a google search, there is a list of them.
You are doing yourself worse harm driving without a license.

My wife is going thru the same thing now for her FL license. She must have a certfied copy of her first marriage which ended 38 years ago. They won't accept a copy, and she's been waiting for 5 weeks for the cert copy from NJ. I guess she looks like a terrorist. Do they really think a terrorist would go to the DMV for a license when they can get forged copies so easily? Just ask many underage college kids how to get one. AL C.
