At times, my toilet bowl will not hold water ... why??

The rubber ring in the groove around the flapper has probably dried out, preventing a good seal. Lubricate it and it will probably hold water awhile longer. If not, the seal will need to be replaced. It's a messy job, but one that you can easily do yourself if you want to save money.

Dirty seal, or something stuck in the valve. Use an old toothbrush to clean it.
Dry seal, Thedford makes a seal conditioner. I get mine at Camping World, soak the seal with it, and put some in anytime you're going to leave the camper for a few hours, or overnight. I keep some in it anytime I'm not using mine for days or weeks. Water evaporates, then the seal dries out.
Bad seal. You can buy a kit and pull the toilet out to replace. Not all that difficult.

Rubber gloves and a good coat of vaseline works for mine. I suppose that could be taken 2 different ways... Lol
Seriously, it works ok. I have found that if I work the seal edges up and down for a minute or so after cleaning and lubricating it, it becomes more pliable and holds water for several months before repeating. Mine is 3 yrs old now and still works well.

I would not reccommend vaseline. You should not use a petroleum based product on the ring. The seal conditioner or olive oil is your best bet.

We really need to know what toilet you have. If it has a sliding gate type valve it might be as simple as bits of toilet paper stuck in the grove where the knife seats. A simple bent coathanger or wire will allow you to clean that out. If it has a ball type valve, it probably has a calcium deposit built up in it and a good soaking with vinegar overnight "might" do the trick. If it doesn't you need to remove the toilet top and take the rubber type gasket out and soak it in CLR for a while and clean the calcium and replace....or just buy a new gasket.

My Sea-Land turned out to be an absolute bummer. The company (distributor) was kind enough to send me (0ver a period of 3 years) 2 gasket kits and a water valve replacement....but NOTHING worked to keep ANY water in the bowl.
Then the "vacuum" valve blew out getting the wall wet.
Finally, a few months ago, in frustration, got rid of it. Camping World was having a "sale" on some Thetford models ($179?) bought one, installed it...and so far, it works just like it should.

Mine will leak down if I let it close to gently. If I let it "slam" shut, all is well.
