I used a ford and chevy shortbed with a slider that I seldomly used. I probably could have gotten by without it. I now use a long bed and of course I think a long bed is the only way to go now! Bigger fuel tank, better ride and more room for aux fuel and stuff.

That all being said with the newer fifth wheels you probably would be just fine with a short bed.

Are you saying that when you tow the distance between the cab and 5th is different depending on whether you are going forward or in reverse.

Hello:
Take a look at my profile and pictuer, I have a short box 3/4 and don't use a slide. Have no problem with it, I just have to keep an eye on it when I turn.

No the point he is making is you can jack knife any 5th wheel if you back up enough, if you think about it for a moment or two it will become very clear to you. But going in circles forward you could go forever. Better yet just go to google and select images and type "jack knifed semi"

I have no problem with my Brookstone. However I needed my slider when I had my 2004 Keystone Challenger.

Thanks for the reply, I should have spent a lot more time thinking about it instead of commenting.

I have a Curt slider in my truck and have used it often (might have something to do with the places we like to go). The slider option was only $100 as I recall.

The rear window in my truck cost me about $350 to replace. How do I know that? There was that one time late at night in the dark when I thought I could make it....... Now, if there is any doubt, I slide. No issues and I can get into or out of a tight spot.

My 2 cents.

It is not the length of the bed to be concerned about, it is the distance between the axel center line and the back of the cab. GM trucks have a longer distance between the axel center and the back of the cab than Ford or Dodge have.

It's all about the length of the pin box on the 5er in relation to the nose. Heavier trailers typically have shorter pin boxes.

I have the nose designed for shortbeds but it will still hit the cab. I have a slider.
