We are planning to stop for a few days mid September at First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach. Will we be able to view any of the jet planes from the Naval base or are they just heard? We would love to watch them.

No, they are down south. The ships are fun to watch. Check them out at night. You can see the jets from the Boardwalk.

The F/A-18 jets fly out of Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach so you will hear and most likely see them. First Landing State Park is not that far away. Most of the ships/submarines are located at the Naval Base in Norfolk although a few amphibious ships are located at Little Creek.

The answer is yes - "probably". All depends on what you mean about mid September. The annual air show for Oceanna Naval Air Station is scheduled for Sep. 15th. The Blue Angels are scheduled to appear.

They won't bother your sleep though.

Agree with Mr. Patches and redhawk 23329. You should be able to hear jets, although maybe not too loud (you can even hear them near I64). If you are here for the Air Show portion of the Neptune Festival in Sept you should be able to see lots of jets flying (from the oceanfront, from near Lynnhaven Mall). Better yet, if you are here during the show, you can go see them too.

One of the things we enjoy at First Landing is watching the ship traffic into/out of Hampton Roads, although we have never camped there.

Ain't that something. We are leaving to go to First Landing SP on Wednesday for a 5 day trip!

I used to go with my parents as a kid to Virginia Beach every July. The jets and the Navy helicopters can be seen pretty much from any of the oceanfront strip of VA Beach, including Fort Story and the First Landing SP area. You'll also see the Navy ships come and go at the mouth of the bay. One year, we took a 4 hour bottom fishing trip from Rudee Inlet and headed up to the mouth of the bay. We crossed paths with a nuclear submarine heading out to the ocean. One of the wildest experiences!

You used to be able to park in a parking lot at Ocean NAS and watch the jets take off. Not sure if that is still possible (due to homeland security post 9/11).

We were there a few months ago. We didn't hear any jets while we were there. We did hear some when we were in town on the boardwalk.

If you really want to watch the planes, there is a parking area just underneath the primary glide path that is open to the public, you can't get any closer to them than that... I'd suggest brining some ear plugs as the F18's are much lowder than their predecesor the F14... The parking lot is located on Oceana Blvd...
