Bought two live crabs off the docks this afternoon for $6 each and fixed them for supper. We pigged out and could only finish one! Absolutely wonderful straight out of the shell or with a little butter. Season ends on August 15th so hurry to get yours.
Diann
P.S. I have cleaned meat out of the 2nd crab and will use it in something soon. Suggestions?
P.P.S. Oops - forgot to say we are in Haines.

We live on the salt water and catch ~10 crabs a week during the season. My favorite is to make a crab salad with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, hard boiled eggs, cucumber, avocado and home made 1000 Island dressing. Heat up a good French Baguette and life is good.
Calculating the cost of crab is like calculating the cost of RV-ing. Don't do it.
I spent $25 for a crab license this year. I had the dinghy ~$400 35 years ago, the crab traps (2) were $75 each about 8 years ago, new oars were $60 this year, dinghy anchoring and retrieval system $75 this year, crab bait maybe $2 per soak... depends what's in the freezer. Rowing exercise = a bonus.
Cooked crab are ~$15 each. $15 x 10 x 16 weeks = $2,400 per season
I also have spent ~$500 over the last 2 years for my bi-valve farming (12,000 Manila clams, 3,000 Pacific oysters, and 35 Geoduck)s... the mussels are free and grow everywhere on my beach.
Should I factor in the $9,000+ per year property tax for waterfront property?
we crab off the docks. still plenty of crab that way. one year we didn't do any crabbing but the people next to us did and they had way too many for the RV fridge, so we got all we wanted. I like that kind. no work all play. DW and I are allergic to shrimp so crab is about the only thing we can eat in the shell fish category. I must add this, the dungeness crab is the best crab out there. we have eaten the crab from back east and they are so small it takes about 20 of them to match the dungeness crab. not a big fan of snow crab either.
Wow,, Finally something in CA is cheaper, We camp at $33 a night, gas is about $100 there and back. We fish/crab off a public jetty (free) They have a (free) cleaning station. I clean them and cook them in sea water (free), I do not add the cost of booze and other food,,, The crab is an add on..
Ok,, growing up on the east coast, I have to say Dungeness crab is good,, But by far Blue Crab is the best!!!

I have to agree. DH got a dungeness crab one time. I tried it. I'll take the Blue Crabs any day.
Whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.

Oh I can beat you all on the price of Dungeness Crab and in Canada too.
A couple years ago we went to the beach on an extreme low tide. We waded out into the eel grass and just picked up the crabs. They were big beautiful and oh to tasty.
We went to the beach to explore the low tide but came home with dinner.
I gotta stand up for my Dungies. I love all crab (actually I love most shellfish) and I have eaten them in the Gulf of Mexico, New England, California, Newfoundland, Northwest and Alaska plus a few more places I can't think of right now. For us, Dungeness are the best with most meat and easiest to eat. Having said that anybody wants to send me another breed to try - no problem I will test them all (LOL).
