Quote gbopp: "A wounded, partially disabled combat veteran cannot use a military gampground but, a pencil pushing civilian can use it?
What's wrong with this picture?"

YUP -- Plenty wrong with that picture - but it's the base CO that makes the choice, and he is often 'pressured' by DOD to allow civilians to 'save housing money they're paid extra for' instead of renting in the area.

And it often over-fills the MCG as well - and leaves some qualified campers without a space. And, in some other cases, fills otherwise empty spaces and helps the MCG meet its expenses = extremely Catch-22, Captain John Yossarian would be proud of this dilemma.

We understand DOD works in our defense too, but the paycheck comparison is not even close, especially with us retired that earned peanuts in-service, but had good benefits that are slowly eroding as the military pay rises, and the ranks fill wtih more selective processing in personnel.

We don't make the rules, but then again, those that make them sometimes look out carefully from inside a small round hole, or maybe find a sharp point beneath their hats.

Basically if you have a military or DOD ID card and can access the base unaccompanied you can use it. Anyone outside the norm is considered a guest of the Commanding Officer. If you have a compelling reason to stay on a base and MWR says no, contact the CO. It doesn't hurt to ask. I've seen it done, and granted.

tks for all the info, even though i was greeted with signs sailors and dogs keep off the grass when coming home in 1969 from my 3rd tour over seas, i guess i am fortunate to have only partial disability and not enough to qualify.

Another happy service person(sailor?) that was stationed in S**t City VA....Gotta love those signs. I have some pictures somewhere of me standing by one of them, in the 60's. Norfolk was well known back then for those signs and it infamous East Main St....Thank you for your service, even tho you had to suffer the indignities of the good residents of Norfolk VA.

(I know some peoiple won't like this but thats OK) These last 4 or 5 years we found that prices are going up big time, some more than places nearby and other places getting closed, which puts pressure on the remaining famcamps which equals more reservations or driving way to far to save 4 dollars on a camp site. So don't feel to bad. Of course there are some real gems also but getting fewer all the time.

Path1 - snot always about the $4 save, it about safety, about camping with other service men and women, about commissary and services on base, about respect when you arrive in the middle of the night and just quietly find a space and check in AM. About camp host helping a guy out instead of popping a fee for a shower, or extra car.

Comparing MCGs to other CG is like apples and oranges (which all have good but different points) particularly NF and NP, and well, apples and oranges have good points too, like taste and juice, and pulp.
