Our Teton Home fifth wheel is wired for our generator from the factory and we are going to install it and we need to know what kind of ventalation etc we will need. Would love to see someone's photo's of it to help us through the process.

Thank you!

Mine required a 1 square foot opening in the door, but check the instructions that will come with your generator. I think some now do not require the opening in the door.

Onan gen or a portable? If the gen "box" is installed,no other vent mods should be required. If your installing an onan all you need to do is cut out the bottom of the box,you can see where to cut the tabs as most boxes are precut with just a few tabs holding in the bottom plate.Even the mounting holes are predrilled.

Don't know how many similarities there are between Onan and what you are putting in, or between Teton's prep and Montana's Prep, but this was our install. I removed the generator from our trade in and installed it in this one myself - with one error noted.

The Prep came with a heat shield built in the front cabinet, a mounting plate with knock out through the bottom, transfer switch and breakers, and a remote/hour meter inside the 5er with wiring to the front cabinet.

The Onan (not all but some) have an internal ventilation fan that draws air and discharges air through the bottom opening. Everything above that bottom opening is completely enclosed, so no vent is required in the cabinet door. Exhaust, fuel hookups are all through the bottom.

I just had to knock out the bottom opening in the Montana Prep. Even the pre-drilled bolt holes in the frame were a match to the Onan.

I routed the output from the generator to the 4X4 box where the two resettable breakers are. My 5500 has a 30A and a 20A output. Starting cables were routed to the battery, and the remote start wiring simply plugged in to the Onan. (Note: - if you have the same Iota ITS-50R transfer switch pictured here, replace it. These were recalled and discontinued due to to poor connection issues resulting in fire).

All done!

Warning - I made one error. The base of the Onan has holes availabe through the base for exhaust to run out the front, side, or back. When installing in a non-vented cabinet door, these need to be covered with aluminum duct tape or Onan's version of Aluminum duct tape, or the heat gets pushed out those holes by the fan. I didn't realize this and actually melted my front door and had to replace it. Tape fixed the issue and all is well.

Happy camping.

You said "Our generator". Hopefully it is a RV generator and not a portable. If it is a portable all bets are off. They cannot be mounted and run in a compartment.

Youy might have better luck with the install instructions if you ask over at the Teton Homes Yahoo site. Try Tetoners.org. Lots of experts over there.

I have an Onan 4000 in our cougar 5er and did the same install as (Mile High) did. I also lout extra hard foam installation above it. My exhaust vents the same way and I made an extra piece that is removable that I use to go up the side of the trailer so we don't have to breath the fumes when we're outside.

Happy trails

Mine is factory installed and those holes not covered and my door is not warped.Actually hardly any heat from those holes. Is the exhaust pipe gasket tight?

Just a quick comment on our decision making of what to do with generators and the RV.

I went with the two 2KW Honda Generators with mine but they were portables and not installed inside the fifth wheel. They sit in the back on my truck bed. Worked good for everything on the fifth wheel including the air conditioning running in parallel. Then the few times we went to camp grounds here on the East side of the US with the fifth wheel we found we couldn't run our generators when we wanted to and most places had generator restriction run times in place - some didn't allow generators at all. I'm guessing this is more relaxed on the West side of the US since places are more spread out.

Then a $200K motorhome would show up where we was camping with a built-in generator and he would run his anytime he wanted too. Even all night... Money talks I guess... I suspect no one knows whether he is running a generator or the motorhome motor... Even the site ranger would walk up and remind us not to run the generator when he saw them sitting in the back of my truck. Just a few site pads down the camp road would be the big motorhome purring away... Certainly was a double standard...

With all of this in mind and the fact I was too lite on my truck to safely tow my fifth wheel I parked it in my back yard and got my 4200lb loaded OFF-ROAD POPUP shown here. I beefed-up every thing battery wise including converter/charger, bigger DC wiring, LED lights, etc., to be able to camp anywhere we want and have enough battery power including Inverters to run all of our 120VAC and 12VDC items we wanted to run (especially the home entertainment center) except the air conditioning and more important be able to re-charge our battery system the next day in a two-three allowed generator run time.

Been doing this way of camping ever since now for past five years and we are very successful camping off the power grids. You can survive without air conditioning camping off the power grids haha...
