We will be stopping in Mission,Tx after some running around(Grand Canyon, Carlsbad, Big Bend). We were at Mission West RV Park the first year we had the MH. But we did not get to look around, wife got sick and we had to get home. For the short time we were at Mission West we did enjoy it, however would like to hear from others about some of the RV parks around this area that we should check into. Also any information on visiting Mexico from that location. I would like to see what they are like for a possible winter layover. Planning on leaving home right after Labor Day. Taking our time while heading out that way. Hope to reach Mission, TX. late Oct to early Nov. Thank for any information I get. Gary

I can offer up some anecdotal information as my parents have been "winter Texans" in Mission for several years now. Thier first stay was at Victoria Palms the first season. They moved to and eventualy bought a lot in Leisure Valley. They like it there so much they are now buying a sticks and bricks home in a 55+ community near the RV park.

They both appreciate how friendly the local businesses treat them as the area is overwhelmingly non white.

They both travel south of the border for basic medical and dental care. Meds are very reasonable and they get and send me my generic "prevacid" that is a fraction of cost of my co-pay alone.

Small correction: Victoria Palms is in Donna TX. There are several hundred RV parks in the Rio Grande Valley - something for everybody!! From west to east, the towns are Mission, McAllen (the largest), Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Donna, Weslaco - they all run into each other so unless you see the small signs, you will not realize you are in another town!! As for Mexico access, there are 3 bridges: a bridge at Pharr ( extremely busy and after a short drive takes you to Reynosa which is not really a "tourist" town, one at Donna (new and not much traffic) - which ends at Mexico hwy 2, then you have to drive 10-15 miles west to Reynosa or 20-25 miles east to Progreso. The 3rd bridge (the best choice, most of us believe) is south of Weslaco and ends right in Progreso. You can drive over but most of us park on the US side and walk. (costs .25 to walk each way and $2 to drive each way). The shopping area is right at the end of the bridge and extends about 6-7 blocks on both sides of the street. The time of year you are planning would allow you to find a spot in just about any park, I believe. After Nov 1, it starts getting more crowded. Progreso welcomes us and has not had problems like a lot of other border towns. We have wintered there for 11 yrs and will be going back this Oct - if I can help further, just PM me

Since you have going to RGV for a "few years" I take it that you like it in that area. Thanks for the crossing information. This is some of the information I am looking for. Have you tried any of the dentist over there?
As I said in my first post were got down to Mission area the first year we got the MH, but DW go sick and we had to get home only spent two night there. Pulled in late afternoon and the next night ( spent the first full day in the RV park checking it out), by morning we had to pull out and get home. Hope to get some time to check out the area this year. Any RV parks I should stay away from? (Just your opinon)

I'd rather recommend a few parks - some of the ones we would not care for may be just fine for others and I would not want to seem critical of their choices. I am not familiar w/Mission so much - we have friends in Green Gate, which is real nice. It sort of depends upon what you want in a park - we stay in Bit-O-Heaven (at the line between Alamo & Donna. It is a well maintained park w/800 sites, most of which are park models and full sized Mobile Homes, a number of sites are reserved year to year for RVs, and several which are available for first come/first served. All properties are kept up nicely. There are all sorts of activities, games, etc., 2 pools - inside & outside, regular entertainers, dances, etc. It is about $350 pmo - depends upon how long you are staying. You can find lesser parks for $200 all the way up to Victoria Palms which is about $675, last I heard last season. VP is a very nice park but most of the rental lots are not very large. If you like, I have a spare RGV RV Parks guide I can send you - it lists all of the parks, addresses, contact info, amenities, etc. PM me w/your snail mail addy and I'll get it in the mail. I can then answer questions about specific parks you might be interested in, perhaps.

Sorry - I missed one of your questions....We do not go to Progreso for dental services but know several who do. They are happy with their choices - I would can ask the names of the ones they go to, if you like.

Thanks that would be great to have a few names.

Far as your Other post, I still have the RGV RV park book I picked up from the TX welcome center. Might be a few years old but the names and address work for internet searching.

I know it is hard to recomend things, As I have found places that someone else said was bad to be to my likings. Thanks Gary

One more note: be sure to ask about the pet policies. I know that the Wilder owned parks always put dog owners together in a certain section and it seems to always be in the most distant part of the park. They are the only ones I've heard of who do that but check on it. It smacks of discrimination to me!! LOL!!

I've lived in the RGV my whole life and can tell you that not going to Mexico is the new norm down here. I have not crossed over since 2007 and the majority of locals do not go across either. I'm often surprised by the number of Winter Texans who are interviewed on local newscasts who cross the border regularly. I would say if you have to go, then go to Progreso only and stay near the bridge area. Stay safe.

Ditto that advice...Gaspeddler1 is not exaggerating, though we Texans are known to embellish stories. I'd go back to SW Asia before crossing to a border town in Mexico right now.
