Last weekend Sally and I finally got to discussing seriously where we should go next year. She had been keen to fly to Iceland, but has had a change of heart (or is at least willing to put that off until a later year).
It turns out Sally has warmed to my idea of renting an RV next May and visiting some bits of Western USA we haven't yet seen, including dropping in on Overland Expo 2013 in Flagstaff. Hopefully it will be a chance to run into a few RV.net friends while in the area
We'd probably have to cram the trip into two and a half weeks - I can never get very long off work.
The big question is - what can we rent? What would really be nice would be a fairly compact 4x4 RV so we could get offroad and visit the sort of places we couldn't expect to see in a full size 4x2 class C.
Any ideas?
Steve.

Usually RV rentals in the US are limited to class C motor homes. Some class a 's will be available. They really frown on off roaring with them. Also please remember the SW US hot season is during the summer. Most people like to avoid that part of the country from May to October.

Don't know about renting RV options, But as far as Iceland
I'd suggest you watch "Anthony Bourdain No Reservations" when he
did a trip to Iceland. After watching it myself, I have no desire to ever go there.

These compact units are very popular with European tourists.
American made but very European in size and style.
They even have AC for Southwest summers.

Check out the video.
Don't know of any 4X4 camper rentals in the U.S. You can rent Jeeps however.

You'll only need 4x4 if you go really off the beaten path. Most of the forest service roads are big enough for logging trucks which are quite large. If you stay on gravel roads, you should be fine except in the higher mountains in May-July. I'd rent a normal RV, and rent a Jeep for the few areas that you might want to go offroad for a day or two. Even better is to take a tour for the extreme offroad and leave the driving to someone else.

Cool!!! As others have been saying, there are many places to rent an RV here, but no 4x4 RVs (that I know of)
If I'm here when you are, you are welcome to camp at my home in my driveway up here in the mountains in Crestline, CA. I can offer 20amp service and water, but no dump station. There is, however a campground up here also 5 minutes from my house that has a pay dump station. My driveway is 175' long, up a hill with a fairly level spot at the top, under tall pine, cedar and dogwood trees with a lake view out the side window. I keep my camper ready as a guest house for this very reason.
In any event, would love to meet ya when you are on the West coast! :-)

Steve,
It would be great if you make the trip - Plenty to see and do within a relatively small radius around Flagstaff including the Overland Expo. If you stick to the high country you needn't worry too much about AC as it is very pleasant here. I've only found one company within a reasonable distance that rents TCs - try this link:
Camping Trailers.com
Good luck - you might also PM Flaxi about his experience here last year with a Class C. I hope to meet you in person!

Steve,
Canadream rents truck campers, if that's your pleasure. Rent one in Calgary an travel south then north in a circumnavigation of the Rockies.
Just a thought,

I wonder if anybody rents camping outfitted 4x4 vans? Probably not I suppose, but it might be more likely than finding a Tiger for rent.
It sure would be fun to make it down to the Overland ExPo one of these years. I just wish it wasn't quite so far south....but it sure would be fun.
Good luck with your trip; I'm sure you'll have plenty of offers to stop by, but add me to your list if you are in Colorado; I'd love to drink a (cold) beer with you.
