After years of toiling and being a tent camper, we want to upgrade to a small toyhauler. The toyhauler is mostly for my height. We are out looking at trucks and want to stay with a 150/1500 as this will be our regular driving vehicle also.

We have found one very lite toy hauler, Jayco's Octane ZX super lite. Using a excel program that I think I found on here, I end up with

1200 lbs of Reserve Trailer Cargo Capacity
2500+ lbs of Reserve Towing Capacity
200 or less lbs Reserve Tow Vehicle Cargo Capacity

That's just me, the wife, the dog, some gas and not much else. And she's not a big woman :-).

The dealerships answer is an additional leaf spring to get more cargo capacity. Does this sound right?

The springs are only one part of the ccc of the vehicle.

You could add bunch of springs and raise your load capacity. Air bags work too. The thing is you have limits on your truck. Axle rating, tire load and your max cargo rating for the truck. Just because you add 3000lbs springs doesn't mean you can carry an additional 3000lbs. I would look at your RAWR and not go over that. If you need some additional help with stuff in the truck and your TT's tongue weight then thats different, but you can't carry more than your truck and it's components are rated to carry legaly.

look for a truck with a 10,000lb rating in a half ton. To much is better than not enough. What's the pin weight, a place to start, gear ratio for rear end. 3:73 would be best for this type of hauling. Look at the whole package not what the sales person says you can do. Been their made many mistakes.

Problem with toyhaulers is they are heavy on the TW when you don't put toys in the back. My dad put a heavier leaf pack and timbrens on his half ton. It was still a half ton. He has a 3/4 ton now and is much happier.

I see your in Az. Well we have extreme conditions here and I went from a 3/4 down to a Vortec Max 1/2 ton with 4.10 gears and I added a leaf and was towing around 6,000 lbs. I would warp my rotors every time I came down from the Rim.We also have extreme heat. Do your self a favor and get a 3/4 ton truck.
If it was flat and cool it may be different but the best part of living in Az is hitting the mountains especialy this time of year but I yet to own a truck that doesn't get 2/3 the way up on the temp gauge when you hit the hills when its 110 deg out.

First consideration "if" your in a overload condition is tires and wheels for the load they carry.

Next is bags or Supersprings or add a leaf to the main spring pack or Timbrens or any of your favorite suspension help for more load carrying ability.

I wouldn't buy anything till you make a trip or two and then decide if anything is needed.

That's funny. I would never get a 3/4 ton - its the same truck as a 1 ton SRW with the payload capability of a 1/2 ton. If the 1/2 ton isn't big enough get a 1 ton SRW.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm about 200 lbs on the good side right now. I'm not getting a heavier TH, but if I throw a shell on the back and have someone riding in the back seats...this calculator throws me into the red zone for the cargo carrying capacity. Anyone know of tall travel trailers? I really don't want a 2500/250.
