My family and I are new campers and we are thinking about a week long trip to Gatlinburg to start things off. Our kids are 17, 10 and 5 and we have a 26' TT. Does anyone have any suggestions for campgrounds that are kid-friendly...pools, etc? I have tried to have info sent to me, but it seems all I am getting are chalets, hotels, etc.....no campgrounds! I have heard the Crazy Horse campground mentioned, but I can't seem to find any info about it. I even called, but all I could get was the machine. I am sure there must be a way to find campgrounds, but, in the meantime, I am hoping to get some info here. I am very glad to have found this forum, for many reasons! Any suggestions, about campgrounds, or good attractions are greatly appreciated.
Kids will love Crazyhorse http://www.crazyhorsecampground.com/. Be sure to approach it from I-40 from the north as the traffic in Pigeonforge/Gatlinburg can be terrible!!!! The campground is just a 10/15 minute drive from Gatlinburg. It has a trout pond, swimming, etc.
Shelly,
Consider all the campgrounds on US 321 between Gatlinburg and Cosby. I have never camped there but have condoed (sp) there several times. One of them has a huge slide that dumps into their pool. It looked like a blast. It might be the crazy horse one. I cant remember. All of them along that highway looked like very nice campgrounds. Tremont Hills campground is a very nice campground.Same thing though i didnt camp there but i did cabin there. ( Its where i got the camping bug when i saw all those ppl in their tents and RVs having such a great time and it was then i knew i had to camp.) I have never regretted since. This campground is on the west side of the national park closer to cades cove but a little farther from gatlinburg but not a terrible far way away from Gatlinburg. Its in Townsend TN. 865-448-6363 if the area code hasnt changed. That is a beautiful area. I suggest you buy a trailer life directory or (shhhh Woodalls directory) and do a little research before ya go.
Happy Campin
Dave

For the life of me I can't figure out why anyone wants to go to Gatlingburg or Pigion Forge, it is one big traffic jam in the summer time. I can remember when it was a nice place to go but not anymore unless you just like that type of a place, shopping, amusement parks, resturants, junk stores ect. When I go camping I like to get away from all that.
I have been doing my research on this same subject now for the last few weeks. My family (10B, 8G, 6G, & 5B) have a class C motorhome and we are going to the Smoky Mtn area for three weeks starting July 13. In order to access the information, click on the magnifying glass icon at the top right of the "Destinations" and "Campgrounds & Resorts" forum subjects. Then type in "Gatlinburg", "Pigeon Forge", "Smoky Mountains", or any other identifying word or words that you are interested in learning about and then you select the period of time you want to check. You will find lots of posts on your subject matter. In fact, if you go to Destinations, you will find a post by me that relates to the campgrounds in the park.
My sister spends all summer in her park model at the Outdoor Resorts of America park on 321 about half way between Gatlinburg and Cosby. She has her grandkids come and stay with her most of the summer. The park is very social for adults and kids - lots and lots of kids are there, playing in the pool, riding bikes, shuffleboard, miniture golf. They make friends quickly and go with multiple familes together on day trips on hikes, to various rivers to go swimming and tubing, to Dollywood, to various entertainment places in Gatlinburg and the surrounding area. It's a nice park.
We stayed last spring at Crazy Horse. It is nice, but we got tired of driving 20 minutes to town. Every time we drove to town we passed Twin Creek RV Resort (www.twincreekrvresort.com) that looks very nice and is only about 2 miles from town. Parking is difficult and expensive in town, but at Twin Creek, they have a trolley stop (free trolley) to ride to town and the attractions. Both CG's are rated high by TL (Twin Creek is 10-10-10). Have fun in the Smokies. They are beautiful.
A great alternative to Gatlinburg is Fall Creek Falls State Park near McMinnville, TN in the Cumberland Plateau mountains. It has more solitude than Gatlinburgin and is just as beautiful.
I would agree with Jim. It just depends on how much out of the hustle and bustle of Gatlinburg ya really wanna be but still be close enough to go to town if you want to. Twin Creek did look like a very nice campground.
A few weeks ago we stayed at Twin Creeks. It doesn't have a large pool and not much "there" for the kids. On the other hand, it was absolutely the cleanest, quietest, place I've been in some time. The bathrooms sparkled and needed a code number to enter that area. The shuttle runs every few minutes and they will take you downtown for a quarter each. Course it's the same price coming back. You are near a pretty busy street. Grocery store about a half block away.
