I have a 1997 f 250 light duty truck and tow a 30 fks sunnybrook using a reese 10,000 # dual cam setup. The trailer weighs approx 8500 lbs loaded. I knew the tongue weight was was heavy and borrowed a tongue scale from the dealer that I bought the TT from The scale would not zero out but stopped at 200 lbs. The tongue weighed 1450 lbs. I subtracted the 200 lbs and it still comes to 1250.This if the weight is right is more than the 10,000 lb hitch. What really concerns me is that the receiver that came with the truck is rated at 850 lbs. I am wondering if the 850 lbs comes from the fact that the tow limit is 8500 lbs and this is the ten percent. I have been pulling with this set up for all most three years with no problems. but now that I know what the TW is I am starting to worry. My question is does anyone know how critical is the weight limits placed on the factory receiver.
I can`t authoritively answer your question, But I would certainly advise you to buy a receiver that is rated to do the job for everyones concern!I guess with the weight you say you have you would need the class Five receiver if they even make it for your truck! When in question or doubt go to a certified scale or truck scale so you know as this is nothing to mess with. What you say you are doing now could have extreme legal ramifications if you were to have an accident!

I'm happy to see someone else is concerned with the rating on their receiver! Most factory trailer packages on the 3/4 ton trucks come with 1000# ratings. Most of the new front kitchen, super slide model trailers come with a DRY hitch weight of over 1000#--add the weight of propane and tanks, two batteries, the hitch--and you are way up there. I had an article written by a hitch shop--got it from a link off this forum--that addressed this problem--damaged receivers. We went to a Titan Class V and a HD Reece hitch (1400# bars) and the trailer tows much better.
