I just bought a new Silverado with a short bed. Will I have room for a below the rail tool box if I get a fifth wheel hitch?

There is on mine, and it sets on the floor of the bed and does not extend above the rails which allows me to see the hitch when I am hooking up. I have an extended pin box and it never comes close to the box.

They are available just not as deep from front to back. I know Highway Products make one for the short beds. www.1800toolbox

There is room for the flush to top of rail models; most manufacturers will have a brochure listing what size for what truck. I just bought a PCI low profile YUKON box today. These are aluminium checkerplate boxes, not sure how widely they are distributed. Website is www.pci-stellar.com ...I had to go with the trailer tongue version, as I have a Truxcedo roll-up cover, and the hardware was in the way for the full width box.
There is about three inches between the box and the front cross rail of the hitch. Might be a little tight if your trailer pin is a frame mount, rather than an extended hitch.
If you can find one that has double latches ganged together, it is easier to release the lid latch by reaching from the side of the truck. Mine, being a smaller box, has one latch in the center, so it's a very long reach to release it, have to get a foot up on the tire.

I have a 2001 Silverado with a short bed. I have a Hghway Products tool box that is 19" wide. The hitch is a 16K SuperGlide that mounts through the bed,so there are no rails. The closest the hitch is from the box is 13". This may give you some idea of how much room you'll have with this type of hitch. The box I have is tappered in at the bottom that will give you another 2". Hope this helps ya some.

Yep. I have a Highway Product toolbox that sits on top of the bed rails (5 1/4 inches tall). I have no problems with clearance and the hitch has plenty of room.

I have a very nice tool box ( black powder coated ) that stands just 2 inches above the bed rail (Seta on the be rail ) and doesn't intefere with my 5ver at all. Also it has about four inches of clearance above the truck bed. BG
