I use a two gallon type from Sears Kenmore. Under $30.00 Prevents short cycling, and protects waterlogging and ruptured water lines due to hot water expansion in the very likey event you loose the air cushion in your water heater. First clue is a dripping safety valve, the second clue is when one of those poly hoses lets go in the middle of the night, and you are running around in your long johns turning off the water. To those who phoo-phoo the need for an expansion tank, keep your mop and bucket handy.
I bought a small Shurflo accumulator tank. Do I install it before the pump or after it? Or does it matter? It requires no electricity so I am just going to cut the flexible water line and splice it in. I didn't want a large (e.g., 2-gal) one because of space limitations under the rear bed where the pump is.
I've had bigger ones and they have drawbacks. All I want is enough to keep the pump from chattering. The little shure flo works great.
A quiet pump would be nice, but my noisy pump will let me know if a line ever lets go
