What year did Ford change the V10 from 275 HP to 310 HP. How was this accomplished?-- Displacement, stroke, computer or what?

The 2000 models had the 310hp engines, and were found in the late 1999 chassis. According to the Ford folks several modifications were made to the engine. 1. different uper and lower intake plenums, 2. different heads with larger exhaust valves, 3. Cam timing change, and 4. changes to the ECM to compensate for the change in cam timing. Displacement is the same. Some folks I'v met during our travels had the Banks system installed on their 275hp V10's and report a signigicant increase in power. Unfortunately you can't boost the hp in the older 275hp engines with just replacing the computer chip.

Sorry, but the 10th digit is the year of manufacture. Seems Ford used some 275 in the early 99's but from then on only 310(305?). 275 hp were used in lighter framed trucks.(pickups). A search might give a web site for the Ford VIN breakdown. X=1999 & y= 2000 year of manufacture.

Dave T, here's a good one for you, my chassis shows it was assembled Aug 99, in Mexico, however the 10th digit in the VIN is "Y." Kind of confusing isn't it.

I have 1999 V10. How can I identify which engine I have. Is there something in the VIN number that would identify it. Don

HELLO,
If the 10th digit of the VIN is a Y you have the 310 hp engine. If the 10 digit is a X you have the 275 hp engine.

Jim,
I am confused on this issue. Seems Ford must have changed their breaking down of the VIN. I have heard rumors that a V10 was used in late '98. Maybe this was where the 275hp was used?? Does their year model start at Jan. 1st ?? Only thing I can say for sure is that my Adventurer does have a Ford V10! hp?? But enough ponies for me!

Called a Ford dealer re. V10 275 Vs 310. He went all over the shop inquiring and ended up telling me that the Head was changed on the 310 HP. The head number will end with IP indicating power increase. Sure hate to crawl under there to find it.

DaveT,
My original post indicated that the 10th digit of the VIN , if a Y will be the 310hp v10.
F53 chasic manf with the V10 in mid 1998 through mid 1999 will have a X in the VIN and are considered a 1999 model with the 275hp V10. There are many 275hp motor homes out there.
Starting in mid 1999, the f53 V10's manf were changed to the 310hp engine and were considered 2000 engines.
I believe my original post is correct.
