Good Sam Members and Take Pride in America Gear Up for National Cleanup Day
(Ventura, Calif.) – Woody Guthrie’s popular lyrics “This land is your land, this land is my land,” are a familiar tune to members of the Good Sam Club, the world’s largest RV owners’ organization. Americans today have the great privilege of sharing more than 900 million acres of public land, and the Good Sam Club has adopted the theme of “It’s Your Land! Volunteer and Make A Difference” for the 2006 National Cleanup Day scheduled to take place May 20-21. This year marks the third joint effort of the Good Sam Club and Take Pride in America® in sponsoring the weekend-long cleanup event aimed at encouraging Americans to help clean up public parks and highways.
“Every year, this proves to be a highly successful event,” said Sue Bray, executive director of Good Sam Club. “We appreciate the efforts that our members put into beautifying our public lands and extend an open invitation to anyone interested in helping. If we all pick up at least one piece of trash as part of the effort, we can and will make an incredible difference.”
Founded in 1966, the Good Sam Club is the world’s largest RV owners’ organization with nearly one million member families. Now in its 10th year, the Club’s Cleanup Day began in 1996 with Good Sam Club members across the United States and Canada volunteering their time and efforts to participate in this project aimed at beautifying public lands.
In 2005, more than 175 chapters across the country participated in National Cleanup Day, donating nearly 18,000 hours to the collection of more than 2,500 bags of trash. To date this year, nearly 3,000 requests for Cleanup Day trash-collection bags have been received by the Good Sam Club headquarters, with additional orders pouring in every day.
“Memorial Day weekend usually kicks off the summer camping season,” said Bray. “It is our goal to clean up as many places as possible beforehand to help prepare our public lands for the enjoyment of campers everywhere. Just as important, we want to set an example for future campers so they, too, will hopefully be inspired to continue our efforts.”
Many Good Sam Club chapters are planning to take part in this national effort, with some chapters planning yearlong events to clean up public lands.
