Tired of snow yet? If so travel back to a happier time, May of 2010. Heres an account of my trip to Florida, that almost didn’t happen. Before the pictures of sunny days and fishing, a prologue. This trip started off as a few weeks away alone with my wife, traveling to the Florida Keys from Long Island New York. My mom was to come down from upstate NY to keep our 16 year old daughter company while we were gone. A week before our departure date my mom took ill with a blood clot in her lungs. It was caught in time and treated with blood thinners . It turned from a life threatening situation to one where she needed rest , monitoring , and time to recover. We were uncomfortable leaving the 16 year old alone, so the trip, as planned was over. The wife graciously suggested I go alone or with a friend. I didn’t think I’de find anyone able to go at the last minute or that I would want along anyway. At the last minute a surprise request came from my friend Gary who I worked with banging nails for years and was a fishing buddy. A surprise because Gary was very sick and in treatment for cancer, stage 4 , in the Lymph system , with small spots on the lungs and liver. He was home after hospital delivered chemo , taking some kind of chemo pills. He’s a tough egg and assured me he was OK for the trip. He wanted to make it a fishing trip. A side note, Gary was tired in the morning , but by lunch was good to go most days.
We packed our gear and I picked him up at 4 in the morning on D-Day
[image]
The plan, make it to Savanah Georgia the first day, get some sleep and continue. A stop at the infamous South Of The Border tourist trap
[image]
Twenty hours later at midnight we arrived at my tradition RV dealer parking lot where I hide in plainsight. We bed down, and it turns out Gary snores LOUD. I sleep outside on the ground to get some sleep
[image]
Just kidding
Next day we made it
[image]

First stop in Florida, Fort Clinch State Park in northern Florida. Nice campground near the beach
[image]
They have a LONG fishing pier which we were to tired to try
[image]
And a fort, the best preserved fort from the Civil War
[image]
The next day we continued to Sebastion Inlet State Park ,halfway down the east coast. We stayed 2 nights. The campground was much larger than Ft Clinch, many more people, but pleasant and quiet.
This time we fished, no luck, should have been here yesterday………
[image]
But we saw Manatees, Porposes, and some fish being caught.
Then down to a private campground outside Key West. We found a great restaurant on Stock Island 5 miles north of Key West on the water in the harbor, The Hogfish Bar and Grill. Great food, big portions, fresh, in fact they supply other restaurants with fresh fish, its also a fishing operation.

All the celebs eat there
[image]
Two days in Key West, with plenty to do.
Street performers, The Cat Man
[image]
We meet women

Gary gets crazy
[image]
We wish

And people watch
[image]
Then on to Bahia State Park where we get into some fish
[image]
Using a different stragedy than the locals who were using shrimp and crabs
[image]
We caught loads of Permit fish, 5-10 pounders, all safly realeased. Our lures worked great, the permits give a good fight.
A lunchtime visit from RVnets Singleslide, Charles and Charlette on their way to Key West
[image]
All the fishing activity finally tired Gary out and it was time to go home. I say goodbye to an Anole lizard who had taken up residence on my tire for days, being careful to evict him before leaving
[image]
And we returned to NY in record time.
Gary is still taking a daily pill, and while not cancer free, its contained. His doctors are amazed at his resilience , and positive attitude, and further amazed the cancer has stalled. Gary had a good fall fishing season, catching some nice bass in the fall run.
Though not the trip I had planned originally , it worked out well, Im happy, it goes in my collection of successful TC vacations.

Thanks for the report. Looks like you guys had a good time. It makes me want to go back to FL. I wish your friend Gary continued success with his treatment. He sounds like a real trooper.

Thanks Steve for the pictures of your trip, and the wonderful lunch we had together!

We are down in a Tampa area campground now for the last 2 weeks, and then off to the Keys, for several days, and back up to a Miami area campground, for a month.

Will be returning to NY, the beginning of April.

We beat out the snow, and had some really warm days about a week ago, but the last few have been below freezing at night, and chilly during the day.

It's starting to warm up, and tomorrow the temps are going back to the mid 70's!

Thanks for the report and the pictures. Yes, its lovely to be reminded of warm places at this time of year (not cold here today, but worse - damp fog all day and dark before 4PM).

Steve.

Oops. Pay no mind, I wanted to see what would happen if there was a reply to a thread from the trip report section. This is what happens. Sorry.

Not sure I'm up for the "wild life" in Key West but I've added Fort Clinch SP to my list of places to go see. Looks like you guys had a fun trip!
