RE: British couple buying an RV in the US

If you purchase and register the RV in California, your sales tax rate will depend on where you will register the RV. Generally speaking, sales taxes in CA will vary from around 7.50% to about 10.50%. The registration cost in CA is based on the value of the vehicle. Figure about 1% of the purchase price. The cost will be less in subsequent years. CA requires all vehicles to be tested for emissions pollution. If buying new, I believe the vehicle does not need to be tested in the first 4 years. If you buy used, make sure the seller (dealer or private party) gets the vehicle "smogged" before you buy it. DO NOT buy used if seller does not provide a very recent smog certificate. You may have to spend a fortune getting the vehicle fixed to pass the smog test. Good luck!

RE: What is the Passport America plan

The 1,450 campground owners that accept PA obviously disagree with the opinion expressed by some here that accepting PA is a bad business decision. As an old business associate used to say: "Half a loaf is better than no loaf."

RE: What is the Passport America plan

Be very careful to see which sites in the camp are available for PA discount. PA camps also have the discretion to assign only certain sites for the discount. They may be already filled, poorly serviced, or nearly impossible to level in. GIMIC101 get you in, bait and switch Why would a quality camp give it away for less than cost? Not so. We have never been assigned a bad site because we used PA. Park operators use PA as a means to attract customers during their slow times of the year.

RE: What is the Passport America plan

We renewed our membership late February and we already saved $106 over the $44 membership cost. We expect to save considerably more when we hit the road for our 7K to 8K mile road trip in a couple of months.

RE: Brought home a 2021 Coachmen Mirada 35ES

Congratulations. We also just purchased a 2021 Newmar Bay Star Sport. We have the same problem with the water not working on electric, however, it works perfect on gas. We also have an ice maker but we haven't bothered turning it on. I guess we should try it to make sure it works.

RE: Can't overcome the fear of buying a Truck and TC.......

If your station in life allows you to proceed with the purchases right now, do it. You may regret waiting a couple years. We're not getting any younger. Good luck!

RE: House Batteries Disconnect Switch & Inverter

When connected to shore power, the inverter screen shows an icon showing the power going from shore power to a light bulb, instead of coming from the batteries. The screen will appear for a short time, even if the inverter itself is turned off. I just want to make sure when I turn the battery disconnect switch to off and I turned off the inverter the batteries won't be drained. As I mentioned before, I've owned coaches before with inverters and never had the batteries die on me while in storage. I was a bit concerned this inverter may have been different than the previous ones I had.

RE: House Batteries Disconnect Switch & Inverter

Thanks for the replies. I assumed all along the kill switch disconnected everything, including the inverter.

House Batteries Disconnect Switch & Inverter

Hi folks. I just purchased a new Newmar gasser, and as I was getting familiarized with the coach, I discovered the 1,200 watt Xantrex inverter will come on when the batteries are disconnected at the kill switch. I was under the impression the battery disconnect switch would completely cut off all connections to the batteries. I have owned other coaches in the past with inverters but it never occurred to me to turn on the inverter with the house batteries disconnected. Are inverters supposed to bypass the batteries kill switch?

RE: Mobile Router that will auto connect to Wi FI- RESOLVED

Just like at home, you can give your mobile router a network name and password, and have your devices connect to your mobile network. However, you're going to have to have your mobile router look for available wifi connections at each location and connect the router to the desired wifi.Once you're connected to the desired network, your devices can connect to your router network.

RE: How to get a loan for RV

Based on the amount you want to borrow, it appears you'll be buying used. Lenders will typically lend on newer RVs and charge a higher interest rate, compared to new. Your best bet will be to check with your credit union.

RE: Cell coverage in Death Valley

Just got back from Death Valley and T-Moble works there. As time2roll stated, decent signal and 3G for T-Mobile as well.

RE: T-Mobile Coverage

I had an opportunity to take my T-Mobile phone for a 400 miles "test drive" around AZ, CA and NV. Our drive took us through mostly small towns and hamlets in the desert and the coverage was mostly good. As expected with all carriers, there were a few spots along desolate areas where there was no signal. The phone also worked well in Death Valley, although data was 3G and some pages did take long to load and others did not load. Note: T-Mobile is in a partnership with other operators in some of the areas we traveled. At times, the phone said were were connected to USA Connect.

RE: Cell coverage in Death Valley

Solid 3G in Texas Springs campground right now. And a beautiful day in DV today. Nice to know.

RE: Cell Boosting Kits Sold on Ebay

Notice the low rating on the reviews please.... Many of those units are being sold as "open box," which leads me to believe they were returned by unsatisfied customers. When I could determine brands, I checked reviews elsewhere and a few of them had decent reviews.

RE: Cell Boosting Kits Sold on Ebay

The real test of T-Mobile coverage will take place when we start traveling, but so far so good.Perhaps their coverage has improved, but, Verizon's been very good to me. I'm not sure how much of your "careful consideration" was cost. :) We were with Verizon for about 20 years, most of those years living in a very large metropolitan area where coverage was second to none. Verizon also served us well most of the time in our many travels across the country. However, as I mentioned before, where we live now T-Mobile has better coverage than Verizon. Proven by testing Verizon and T-Mobile cell phones side by side using apps measuring signal strength, tower locations and speed comparisons, and by checking a couple of up-to-date cell coverage third-party websites. And, yes, cost was part of our careful consideration.

RE: Cell Boosting Kits Sold on Ebay

You may consider switching to Verizon and not have a need for a booster. Yeash T Mobile has the worst coverage out west. Verizon is the best followed by ATT After careful consideration we recently switched from Verizon to T-Mobile. We actually have much better coverage with T-Mobile than Verizon in our small community. The real test of T-Mobile coverage will take place when we start traveling, but so far so good.

RE: Cell Boosting Kits Sold on Ebay

You are rolling the dice buying electronics from eBay chinese suppliers. I bought this unit off Amazon where you can at least return something. It seems to give about one to two bars of signal boost. Tho I have not done a quantitative test yet. We had visible/Verizon signals everywhere this last summer except one spot. That was in 21 states and 32 camp spots. I'm also considering this unit. I like the fact it comes with an external omni-directional antenna. Based on what I've read, experts recommend using omni-directional antennas for RVs since they don't require taking the time to aim the antenna. We bought a painter pole that extends to 20 feet for$35 from Lowes. Putting the antenna up higher can get a signal when you have none or a weak signal. I could put a directional antenna on that but like you I am holding off on that. We did not have the pole last summer tho the antenna is on the top of our ladder, about 10 feet up. I'm also planning to get a telescoping pole.
