After cooking yet another battery I've decided to replace my cheap Magnetek converter/charger with something better.

What would you all recommend as a good (and hopefully easy to install) unit?

PD9140 (40 amps) w/Charge Wizard.

They also make 45 amp and 60 amp versions.

Try the search function, there are many good posts on this topic.

My old Magnetek cooked several batteries.

What Brad said--I have the Progressive Dynamics 9145 with the charge wizard---and have had several magnetechs. You won't believe the difference! No more short-lived batteries, almost no water maintenance, fast but certain charging. Great product worth every cent...ChuckD

I am wondering if the best approach might be a Xantrex Heart Freedom Inverter/charger with link control.
I used this on my boat with good results.
It seems you would be providing both 120 volt power and battery charging.
Has anyone used this approach in their TC??

FF1063: The 9245 is not available for retail sale. They are only offering it to the manufacturers. The 9145a with the optional charge wizard is the same thing.

I researched this subject fairly extensively a few months back while my camper was being built. Based on that research and comments that I received from this forum, I equipped my camper with a bank of Trojan T-125s and a Progressive Dynamics 9160A with Charge wizard and 4 gauge wire connecting them. I am extremely happy with the setup and highly recommend the Progressive Dynamics product. I keep the camper plugged in (garage storage) and the batteries have yet to be serviced after a couple of months of being plugged in. The 9160 has proven to be very quick in returning the batteries to full charge after our camping trips (dry, but only for a couple of days thus far). Highly recommend it.

After cooking a perfectly good Interstate battery, I replaced the Magnetek with a PD9160 w/charge wizard. The camper has been on 120 VAC continuously for 3 months. Only a couple of ounces of water per cell has been needed to top off my Trojan SCS225 battery.

NetBoy has a good write-up on this replacement procedure:

http://home.comcast.net/~netboy/#InteliPower

Some people used the PD9145 or smaller. One advantage of the smaller converter is it would draw less 120 VAC power when charging a depleted battery. This would be important if you have limited power such as a Honda 2000 watt generator or plugged into a 20 amp circuit and are trying to use the AC. One disadvantage is the height of the PD9145 and smaller converters. They are 4.5 inches vs. 3.6 for the PD9160. You might want to measure your opening first before ordering a "smaller" charger.

It is worth the trouble and expense.

I just got back from Camping World. The 9160 was $180 and 9140 was $200. Guess which one I bought.
