Our original plan was to be in Titusville Florida for the last Discovery Shuttle launch STS 133. Unfortunately work commitments kept us from leaving in time to see the launch. As suggested by several trip reports on rv.net, we made reservations at Manatee Hammock Campground so we could watch the launch from there and not have to worry about the traffic jam after the launch. So instead of watching the launch we explored the area for a couple of days in preparation for a future trip. We spent a day at Kennedy Space Center and also went over to Jetty Park Campground to see if that was a possible place to watch the next lauch in April. We decided Manatee was going to be the best unless we could score an invitation to the VIP stands on NASA property just 3 miles from the launch pad...not likely. The other reason to be in Florida was our grandsons first trip to Disney World. So we combined the two and broke the end of the trip up with a couple of days at Henderson State Beach in Destin FL.to finsh the adventure. We have a few pictures to mark the occasion so without further delay...

Here is a shot of me driving across the Florida Panhandle...I know some of you can relate.

But "Happy Dog" kept an eye on her as he always does

We finally make it to Manatee Hammock Campground. We stopped in Tallahassee the previous night so we didnt have marathon drive the first day. A few pictures of the campground and viewing area.

That small white building you see in the picture across the Indian River is the VAB - Vehicle Assembly Building on Merritt Island. This was taken from the boardwalk at Manatee.

Here is a closer shot. If you look to the right you can just see launch pad 39A where the shuttle Discovery launced.

Outfitter nestled in the trees. Manatee is a nice camground and a good place to watch the launch.

Also made a trip to Jetty Park. We spent several hours here walking the boardwalk and beach. Nice campground but probably not the best place to watch a launch in our opinion.

Next on the list was a visit to Kennedy Space Center. Close up of the VAB. The flag on that building measures 110' x 209'...

We were there four days and had an wonderful time with our family and especially our grandson watching him enjoy the parks and the roller coasters. So, the next morning we made a break for it and headed for Henderson Beach State Park in Destin to relax a little before heading home. We got there late afternoon...

Great pictures and thanks for sharing. We lived in Indialantic for 5 years and we always went outside to see rockets and shuttles launch. It really is a shame that you missed the launch it is something you would never forget. When a rocket launched you could feel the ground rumble 35 miles away. Watching a night launch at the beach incredible.

Cool report. It shows that Outfitters do well in civilization as well as the outback! Good times with family and friends. Can't be beat. Like Tory's Cap'n Morgan! [emoticon]

Thanks,

Bill

Ah Ben, where have you Ben? We need more of your trip reports, so much fun. It appears you've touched on everything here...kids on the beach, men on the moon, family at Disneyworld and so much more. Congrats on getting the Outfitter out and hope you get another trip in soon.
Best to you and Tory,
Dave & Lynn

Nice trip report.
I got to go to the Kennedy Space Center in 1995 while on pilgrimage to the Daytona 500. Wanted to see the jetty but could not find it and the space center personnel weren't helpful. In February, the space center is pretty empty and you can see everything quickly and easily. We were on very limited time so we did what we could.
Thanks for sharing the trip.

You know Ben, I was looking at your trip report again and I was thinking that the "sleep mode" was a GMC only option. How did you get one in a Frd? [emoticon]

What a great Trip Report Ben. It is nice to see different locations and activities in these reports. It is fun to see young people "stoked" doing something that they really want to do. It is nice you and Tory can spend time with your growing family and have some fun exploring along the way. Thanks!

What a great report. I saw the maiden voyage of the Challenger but it was from near Orlando, quite a ways out. Don't recall the exact year. I'll take some campground tips from you here and put this in my bucket list of things to do.
Thanks for posting!
