Federal Excise tax on tires

Just had 8 new tires put on my mh for $5,500. They charged me $201 in FET and then charged me $400 tax on my total which included the FET. So I am paying a tax on a tax. I know there are tax friends out there. Is that right???

22,5" rim torque specs

Getting ready to have my tires changed. Freightliner told me the lug nut torque specs are 450 ftlbs. This seems high to me but that is what I'll go by. Just curious, what you guys know about this. Thanks! The rims are the polished aluminum Alcoa rims.

Key West question

Going to the keys in 3 weeks. Never been. Tell me about the overseas highway. Is it all two lanes? Is wind a problem? If you have a flat, is there a shoulder? Any comments or tips appreciated. Thanks!

RE: 22.5 tires $$$$ ?

Keep this in mind also and not everyone agrees with it but there are many people who will buy the 22.5 tires if they are decent. Mine only has 20K miles on them but I am changing them soon due to them being 7 years old. I already have a local trucking company guy who is eager to buy them for about $150 each. They are much better than what you see on local big rigs typically.

Wiring Question on MH

This is a long shot but here goes. I replaced all four of my coach batteries. On one of the batteries in the rear of tray is a wire that is tie wrapped to one of the battery cables and connects to a positive terminal. This is a factory connection. While hooking up, this unknown wire pulled out of the connection that is for the battery post. I have never seen a wire set up like this. This is a fairly small wire and is flat. The part that sticks into the battery terminal connection looks like a wire loop, no ends, with a small piece of wire insulation stripped away. This wire was held in the connection with the shrink wrap which came loose. The wire was not soldered in or crimped in. Just stuck in. I stuck it back in and taped it. After all was hooked up, everything seems to be working ok so far. Does anyone have any idea what this wire might be? Again this wire is a small flat wire almost like a phone cable. I plan on calling Thor about it to see if they can help.

Battery compartment vent

I am in the process of installing new batteries(6). I cleaned all the dirt and sand out of the compartment and repainted. This compartment is located behind the rear wheels so lots of dirt and sand comes up into the compartment through the 2 inch vent hole in the bottom of the compartment. I want to install some type filter that will stop the sand and dirt but still provide ventilation. Any ideas??

Key West suggestions other than Boyds

We (2 motorhomes) are going to Key West in May. We were going to Boyd's until they told us our dog was not allowed. She is a sheppard MIX. We sent them a pic of her and they were kind of rude back stating that she was NOT ALLOWED!....That takes care of that, I'll never go there dog or no dog. Anyway, we are now looking for somewhere else that is nice, full hookups, fairly close to Key West and less than $150 a day. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Step motor replacement issues

I replaced my step motor several months ago. Learned a lot including that there is a cover screw head that wont allow the unit to line up right due to clearance issue. Had to remove a plastic plug from the old unit and install in the new unit for alignment purposes. This is on the thin metal cover plate under the drive gear. Ok. Yesterday, I replaced the drive motor on a friends MH. These units are held on with 3 bolts. Well, one of the bolt holes still had metal in it that would not allow the bolt to pass. Had to drill it out. After about 2 hours of fighting, all I got in was two of the three bolts. The third hole is about 1/8" out of alignment. Looks to me like a cheap part that is not made to spec. Just putting this out there so others may be aware of issues in replacing these motors.....
