RE: Multimeter recommendation?

Here it is on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-CL390-Electronic-Resistance/dp/B08DTDCG7T/ref=asc_df_B08DTDCG7T?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=79920843356084&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583520392045748&psc=1 That's dirt cheap for everything it does but I bet it's a throwaway meter if it ever goes out of cal. I have an old UEI throwaway but it's nice to have the DC clamp sometimes. Craig

RE: Transmission cooler options

My trans was hitting 219 and the bypass valve, TBV, was the first thing I removed. Then I figured out the coolant was still heating the trans to high temps so I got rid of that exchanger and put on the fan/cooler, under the truck, with a fan stat. Fan comes on at ~153 and shuts off ~140. Then the fluid goes thru the front air cooler. When I'm on the hiway, towing or not, the front cooler keep the trans temp down so the fan on the Derale doesn't even come on. My trans still gets to ~140 w/o the TBV. I got lucky, the Derale fan/cooler and the front air cooler work GREAT together. Craig

RE: Transmission cooler options

Do you have room somewhere for a big fan cooled remote cooler? I put a 67kbtuh Derale with a fan stat on my truck and removed the liquid/liquid exchanger and all is great... 140-160 degrees trans temp and The engine and trans can no longer heat each other. Craig

RE: Fresh water tank drain too slow

See if you have an access cover under the plumbing area. Mine has one and it isn't very hard to fix those kind of things. My water drain was already done with 1/2" IPS but the opening in the tank was choked down. The right size drill bit quickly fixed that. Craig

RE: Bought a second truck.

It's nice to have a 66 engine instead of one of the 76 messes they built! That low of mpg might be a blown power valve in the carb. Craig

RE: Removing old caulk

^^^ I scrape the ugly discolored stuff off the surface and I stop when I get down to the good viable stuff, underneath, and then I put a layer of new caulk on top. As far as a solvent that cuts the caulks fairly well w/o dissolving the everything else... I've had good luck with naptha or lo-vol mineral spirits, depending on the type of caulk. Craig

RE: Furnace flames cycles off before temp is reached

I'd use a meter and determine what's doing the cycling, first, stat or hi limit. Check the temp rise. I've never had short cycling problems with my RV furnaces but I like to see no more than 70* degrees rise in a res. furnace, when the airflow is really good. Make sure the flex ducts aren't kinked, stat in warm air current, clean the blower wheel, dragging motor, etc... normal checks and maintenance. Craig

RE: FIRST TIME BUYER LOOKING FOR OPINION ON CERTAIN MODELS

Be sure to take a big note pad to the RV show. I've seen so many units and different features at those shows and then I couldn't remember one from the other, a few days later! From my experience... don't buy the cheapest or the lightest. Craig

RE: Alignment...I think!

It was worn out bushings that cause bad tire wear for a friend of mine. New bushings and no more problem.

RE: Forest River Electric Water Heater Issue

If the element ohms open, use this one...https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006JLVC6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It will be 1125W on 120ac and it will be super low watt density. I just put one in my Dometic and it works fine. The oem element was 1440 w but I don't care about taking a little longer to heat the water. It gives my DW a few more amps for her hair implements! Craig

RE: Amps/voltage to trailer brakes

Look at the different magnet sizes that are available... https://www.dexteraxle.com/user_area/content_media/raw/al-ko-genuine-parts-catalog-(lit-775-00al).pdf All my 5ers with 12x2" brakes had the small magnets and none of them stopped well. I've tried bigger brake wire, including in the axle, top quality pre-arced shoes from a brake shop and nothing made a nickels worth of difference. Volt and amps were also fine. Then I bought a used 18k Dexter tri-axle cargo trailer when I moved back to Co. and it had 12x2 drum brakes and those brakes were terrific. I pulled the wheels to check the brakes and pack the bearings and it had the much bigger magnets. That was the only difference. I would try the big magnets, besides the wire improvements. I changed my current 5er from drums to discs and they beat any drums but those 12" brakes with big magnets were a close second! Craig

RE: Mount 100lb mini-split condenser to rear wall?

I built my hitch for bikes so I used 2 x 4 x 1/8 tubing... the iron yard had the remnant already cut. The hitch is all welded but I bolted the completed hitch to the 5er frame so I didn't have to weld next to all the flammable materials. It won't go anywhere with 6 - 5/8" bolts going through the 2 x 2 x 1/4" tubes that then go into the heavy backing I put inside the frame tubes. https://i.imgur.com/SUyKKCol.jpg

RE: Mount 100lb mini-split condenser to rear wall?

I built a rack on the back of one of my 5ers, all welded to the frame, to haul a 10' pontoon boat. A small rack for a mini split and bikes would be cake! I recently built a bumper on my Sunny Brook so I could use my old bike rack. I'll post a picture. I bolted this one to the frame and it might give you some ideas. Mini split companies need to work on rv systems. They'd sell like crazy, with their amazing seers. The cassettes and multi zone systems have been around for a long time... They just need a low-pro roof condensing unit. Craig

RE: Replacement Toilet Recommendations

I put in a Dometic chair height oval ?320?. I already had put a sprayer along side it. My wifes' knees are even worse than mine and she wanted it higher so I made a 1 1/2" riser under it. We're both perfectly happy with it. Craig

RE: Airbags and Compressor and Tank

Anything goes as far as a valve and gauges. I ran a tube from the tank to the back of the truck so I can connect a hose for tires. Craig https://i.imgur.com/YLKTQ3Kl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/bvojFYVl.jpg

RE: Refrigerator won't light at higher elevation

Clean the rod with a scotchbrite pad and wipe the porcelain with alcohol. Check it closely for carbon tracking. It could be an ignitor alignment problem if you can light it other ways but the ignitor rod won't. DON'T try to bend the rod w/o heating it with a torch first! I also blow the dust out of all my burners every few years. Check the system pressure with everything lit. Craig

RE: Why no ignitor on RV stove?

Even the entry level RVs I used to buy had ignitors on the stove. I didn't know there was a low enough level not to have one. I added one to my oven.

RE: Vanleigh RVs

We looked at them 4 years ago at the. Phx. Winter shows and I couldn't find a speck of solid wood in any of them. I think they were furnished by IKEA.

RE: Scary moment towing my 5er around Denver last week

It's usually a mad dash at the top of that hill when everybody decides which way they want to go and they do it intentionally at the last second.

RE: Denver area in Winter??

I lived at Broomfield, Westminster and Arvada from 70 thru 03. It doesn't get as cold as it used to but I remember week long spells that got to -20... several times. Friends who sold their house and went to full timing spent their first winter at Prospect Park in an 03 Sunny Brook with the cold package. I went to see them one night in a 10 degree snow storm and their 5er was as tight and comfy as my house. I'm at Pueblo now which is in the Banana Belt and we've seen -5, even here. Good luck!
