RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. It's raining and cold here in the Deep South. The weather forecast is for rain all day and tonight with snow in the higher elevations. That means no snow for us. The prednisone is working. I am pain free, just suffering the side effects of the meds. I would like to take the camper out for two or three days. maybe we will be able to squeeze it in just as soon as I finish with the doctors. I finally figured out how to burn the green wood. Just pile it high and put the starter logs under it and it will build a hot box inside the pile and if I keep the wood on top as it burns off the wood on the bottom will burn. Dixie is such a hoot. She wants to play in the morning with her toy bird. She gets it and runs to me as if she wants me to take it and throw it. As soon as I reach for it she runs with it and plays keep away. If I am ever able to get it and throw it she will chase it and fetch it back to me only to play keep away. After a while she will get tried and lay down with it, but ever on guard to make sure no one gets it from her. I was looking at pictures of Old Fella the other day. He was such a great dog. It was amazing how quickly he settled into the routine of the house. He was so trusting after he learned no one was going to hurt him. He loved his bed. in his golden years he spent a lot of time just lounging around on it. I won't never forget the weekend we lost him. WE went to Ava's Housse here in Greenville. We had to carry him up the stairs to the bedroom where we were sleeping. We made a sling out of a bed sheet. He allowed us to carry him in the sheet without struggling or showing any fear of what we were doing. When he saw his bed on the floor next to our bed he was excited to know he would be with us and not downstairs by himself. The next day started out peaceful. Sue left with Ava to go shopping. It was in the afternoon that I took Fella outside with me in the front yard. He took care of business and found a spot to lay down on his side. I sat on the grass next to him. He reached out with his left front paw to touch me. I reached over and petted him and the look in his yes were of love and peace. Little did I know this would ne our last time out together. We went back inside the house and Fella laid down. IT was then I noticed blood coming from his mouth. I wiped the blood and tried to see where it was coming from. I was not ale to see anything so I phoned Sue and told her to get home ASAP so we could take Fella to the emergency Vet clinic. When Sue got home we loaded Fella in the truck and took him to the vet. By the time we got there Fella was unable to walk or stand on his own. We put him on a stretcher and carried him inside and waited for the vet to maker her diagnoses. I knew Fella had bone cancer but didn't realize it had spread so far so quickly. When the vet came to us she was shaking her head and then we knew it was bad news. Fella was put to sleep with our hands on him and with tears in our eyes. Our life with Fella had come to an end and all too soon. Just three and one half years since his rescue he crossed the bridge. The experience of Old Fella was a magical story. In all of my years I have never experienced such a story that has had so much of an impact on the lives of people. Just think of all the lives that have been saved because of him and the rescue effort he inspired. This thread helps keep his memory alive and the rescue effort on going. Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. The rheumatologist yesterday wasn't much help. He told me what I already knew. He did give me more prednisone which is a big help for masking the pain. He told me sometimes this goes on for years before it goes away. Meanwhile take prednisone and be thankful that I am able to get it. He were supposed to get lots of rain this morning, but so far nothing. It's going to be cold all day and rain tonight. I brought up firewood from the back yard and stored it in the garage to keep it dry. I found a way to keep it burning so we do have fire in the fireplace. The wood is not seasoned and is hard to burn. BUt by stacking it and starting the fire beneath, that is under the grate it and keep the fire going it finally catches and burns all day. It's a slow burn, not giving off much heat, but it is better than nothing. Lately I have been getting a lot of bogus phone calls from scammers. The best one was yesterday when I got this call that one of my credit cards had been compromised. He needed the information form my cards to determine which one had been used in a fraudulent charge to HD.com. Hello! Am I stupid. Give him the information on all my cards so he can have a great pay day. I wonder if anyone falls for this? Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Richard, your latest post brought back some great memories of when this all started, so I went back to the beginning and read the first 50 pages. It is truly how unbelievable this story is based on that day you made contact with an old stray. Who would have thought what came about from your contact with Old Fella. For me personally it made me more aware of loose dogs and if they needed a helping hand. One particular instance was in Yuma over 10 years ago when me and a friend from B.C. Canada were walking our dogs along the canal in Yuma by our Campground. We spotted a Yellow Lab digging into the side of the canal. We took our dogs back to the Camp and with some leashes in hand returned to see the dog. We walked right up to her and could see she was pregnant. We figured she was trying to dig her a safe place to birth her pups. We were able to put a leash on her and she was really friendly and started walking with us back to the Campground. The manager sent her Maintenance guy down with the Golf Cart and this sweet girl jumped right up in it like she knew what it was. She was placed in the Maint. Shed and me and Nat along with our wives were talking with the manager and her husband about the dog. The manager sent her husband to the shed to get the dog. A bed was made for her in their Mobile home in a bedroom and all six of us spent the night talking and watching her give birth to six puppies. Three of them died and the other three, 2 males and 1 female made it. The Manager kept the 2 males and the mother until she was able to find the 3 of them a good home together and with a pool. The female was named Molly and our friends from Canada adopted her. I was dubbed as Uncle Joe. When ever we meet up over the years Molly remembers me and comes running and howling to me. I just saw her in early Dec when we met up in Quartzsite, AZ and she still runs to me all happy. I contribute the saving of that Mother and her Pups to this thread about Old Fella. I've always loved animals but never really considered thinking about their welfare when I would see them loose. For that I would like to Thank You, Richard, for making me more attentive to loose dogs. I still believe this Old Fella story would make a fantastic book and Movie. Right up there with Old Yeller. Thanks Sgt. Joe for the words of encouragement. So much has come from Old Fella's rescue. I long for the days to go back and relive them just to see the expression on his face when he realized he had a forever home. He was so happy and soaked up every minute of it. What a great experience. He was so loving and grateful to have a family. He enjoyed the trips we took him on. He never seem to be fretful of being on the road away from his home as long as he was near us. He never let us out of his sight, always aware of his surroundings and where his family was. He liked people after he realized he wasn't goingp be hurt. He adjusted very well to his new life. He lost the fear od people after he had been with us for a while. It was amazing how he became so trusting after all those years of abuse at the campground. The picture Sue took of he and I. with him looking up at me is an image of pure love and trust. I believe it was at that moment he realized just how much he was loved and just how much he had come to love me. It is a picture I will always hold dear.

We lost Gary one year ago today.:( What a nice guy. Gary is missed and I hope there was a glad reunion with he and his fur babies at Rainbow bridge. Such a great compassionate friend he was.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. It's cold here in the Deep South this morning. Frost on the ground and a high of only 47 degrees. Fire in the fire place all day today. Love the fire place. It's a good morning so far. I woke up without pain. Ate an oatmeal breakfast with orange juice and coffee and now sitting in front of the computer. Sue just got back with the girls from their walk. The cats are cuddled up in their warm sleeping pad with the heat on. They love the heat pad. Can't say I blame them. THe feral kitten is getting used to us being around and doesn't run when we come out the door. I guess he or she has associated us with food and water. Okay I am going to close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them. Pray for those who are ill and lift up those who need to be encouraged.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. It is cold here this morning. The high today is supposed to be 43 degrees. It is 39 right now. This thread has been going for a long time now. WE have lost a few we started out with, but we still have a few that have stuck with us for over fourteen years. Thanks you for being great friends over the years and to those who we have met in person and continue to fellowship with, thanks for the memories, I guess at some point this thread will end. And Old Fella will become a memory of days gone by. What a blessed day when Sue and I came across that old black dog at Modoc campground. Who would have thought he would have become such a giant in the rescue effort of stray dogs. The trip to New Mexico for the Good Sam Rally in 2009 will always be a high point in my life. Meeting Sue Bray and the other folks of the Good Same Club was really a treat. Being named the RV'er of the year was another high point of my life that will always bring joy to my life. I remember those who followed us to the rally and enjoyed the award ceremony. I look at the pictures and remember how great it was to be apart of such a group. Gary Shapiro had a great time with his fur babies. Gosh it's hard to realize Gary is gone. What a great character he was. You go through life and you meet a lot of people, but you have very few very good friends. Gary was a very good friend. Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a ug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them. Remember I pray for each and everyone of you each morning . So may you have a wonderful God blessed day. And if God is willing I will speak with you tomorrow morning.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. It's the start of another day. I hope all is well with everyone. I have fire wood that won't burn no matter what I do. I guess it's too green. Anyway I have given up on trying to burn it so I guess we are done for the winter with the fireplace. Yesterday our neighbor found Dixie's collar in the open field where Dixie lost it several months back. It's too big for her so I guess I need to take up some links so it fits better. Our weather forecast is for winter weather to come in over the weekend. No snow or ice, just colder temperatures. more like winter than the warm temperatures we have been having. There kitties are still here. I brought in some cat houses for them and a heating pad. They seem to enjoy the heating pad a lot. I'm not sure of the houses as they sleep on top of them more than they go inside of them. I am feeling okay this morning. I don't know if I should take myself off the prednisone or wait until the doctor tells me to get off of them. I am pain free and am doing okay getting around, just worry about the side effects of the stuff. I am gaining weight and feel tired all the time which I think is a side effect of prednisone. I want to get the camper out, but just don't feel like messing with it. Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good report from electrocardiogram. The test says I am doing great. No problems at all. No recommendations from the doctor. So I guess I just keep on doing whatever it os I have been doing. The polymyalgia is back and I am on the prednisone again. I go to see the doctor for that January 22. This morning I feel great. No pain, just the effects of the prednisone. I slept great last night. I was up only twice to pee, That's a record for me. Tuesday night I must have been up 5-6 times, I lost count but yesterday morning I felt very tired when I work up. Okay I need to get moving so I will close for ow wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fir babies a hug fro me and be sure to tell someone you love them. OH BTW, it's warm outside this morning, but the weather man says winter will be coming our way this weekend,

Good morning everyone. Well LSU was too much for Clemson last night. It was a good first half and them LSU figured out Clemson's game plan and it was all down hill for Clemson after that. Maybe next year if Clemson can keep it's starters. This morning is a good morning for me. Not too much pain as the prednisone wears off. Just wanted to lay in bed this morning under the nice warm covers. Dixie came and joined me for a short morning nap. Dixie loves to snuggle in close. She is such a sweet heart. It's very foggy here this morning. reminds me of Nova Scotia. WE woke up one morning and the fog was so thick you couldn't see the end of the camper. It stayed that way most of the day. It's warm this morning at 65 degrees. I guess that is the reason for the fog with all of the humidity. The geese will be walking instead of flying this morning. Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. WE had a thunderstorm roll through last night that was strong. The temperature is very warm for this rime of year. To\his morning the sun is out, The sky is bright blue and it's 65 degrees. I am coming off the prednisone this morning and I fell kind of strange. I won't make it to church this morning as I seem to be nursing a hangover. The after effects of the meds is awful. I used up all the prednisone and now I have to adjust to life without it. Boy did I get Dandy Dan confused last night. I told him the National Championship between LSU and Clemson was last night when it is Monday night. I stay so confused about what day it is lately. Can't seem to get my mind straight with the facts. Okay I am going to close for now wishing everyone a blessed da day. RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. Last night Sue fell walking the dogs. She cut her face and has a black eye. Her right knee is very sore this morning. She said it was because of low blood sugar. This morning I have an appointment to have an electrocardiogram. Nothing wrong, just something the doctor wanted done for whatever reason. I final got an appointment with a rheumatologist for Jan 22. Then we are going somewhere with the camper. WE are trying to get the neighbor to take responsibility of the vats. After a meeting of the minds yesterday Sue made an agreement with Steve to take the heated bed and put it on his front porch so they will be able to stay warm. However Steve's wife must have taken exception to having the bed on their front porch and mover it somewhere else. Anyway the kitties couldn't find the bed so they returned to our front porch last and slept on the cold cement. I felt sorry for them and put a towel out for them to sleep on. Today I will go get them a heated cat house and put it on the porch for them. Okay that enough for now. I am going to close wishing everyone a blessed day. RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good afternoon everyone. I don't know what I would do if not for the prednisone. but the Side effects aren't good. I am pain free at a price, but then everything has its price. Today I have been nothing but lazy. Can't get up the energy to do anything. just want to sit in the chair and snooze and eat everything in the fridge or cabinets. It has been a day to sit inside by the fire place watching the logs burn. The fur babies have been in and out all day. Like flies on a screen door, There are those who want in and those who want out. WE switched services with the phones yesterday. What a nightmare. changing accounts. changing passwords. changing emails addresses. Sue says we will save money in the long run. Okay How long is the long run? The weather today is very unusual. It has been very windy. The outside temperature has been very mild, but the wind makes it cold. The fire in the fireplace has felt good. The wood has been burning very slowly as it was good and wet from the rain we got yesterday. Sue has napped most of the day while I have held down the lounge chair. I am hoping to go somewhere next week with the camper just to get away if nothing else. Walter I see you are in Alabama. Hope the weather is nice and you are enjoying yourselves. Watch out for the snakes. The cotton mouths are dangerous. If it wasn't so far we might would like to join you and Garland. It's about 500 miles for us one way. I said I am done traveling that far anymore. Wish I was a bit younger and a little mre energetic. Okay it's about supper time so I will close wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug foe me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. Well if yesterday was a good day, today is just the opposite. Yesterday Sue decided to change our phone service to Spirit from Verizon. What a nightmare. nothing is simple anymore, Voice mail doesn't work. Don't know how to answer the phone when it rings. Just crazy. Okay I need to get going before I tear something up. Have a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone yo love them

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. I feel so much better this morning. The meds are kicking in and I am pain free right now. Thinking about a short trip to Waynesboro next week to Magnolia Springs State park or either to Cherokee NC. Both are about the same distance so It would be an easy trip with the camper. I am getting a lot of backlash from resigning the deacon board. Family thinks I should stay on and do whatever I can when I feel like doing it. Chairman of the deacons feels the same way. I don't know if that is best for the church. It seems selfish to me if I cannot do the job as it is intended. So I am still praying about it to see how God leads in the matter. There are days I feel good and then there are days I feel terrible. Just hard to know what to do. Georgia won their game last night, finishing a good year. Two looses in their year put a hurt on them, especially the game in Carolina. A non ranked team beats a team that is ranked is not good news. Lsu is going to be a tough game for Clemson. Don't know if Clemson can win that one/ lSU is a power house this year. The Old Fella Rescue is doing good. They have had a great year, still going strong thanks to the volunteers that keep it going. Margie Riggs is doing a great job keeping the puppy train moving to the North East Animal Shelter. That is a God sent organization that takes so many of the Old Fella rescues each month. Rthey deserve any donations they get as they continue saving the lives of so many dogs and puppies. Thank God the work continues and is doing so well. Okay I need to get moving. We have to take one of the cats to the vet's office as it seems to have gotten into a fight with the opossum and the cat has sustained an injury to it's left front leg. There is a hole in the leg where it was bitten in the scuffle. I guess it was over the food bowl. That's the only thing I can think of that they would fight over. I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I watched the game until half time. The real turning point was a "targeting" call on an OSU defensive back followed by a couple of other penalties. That got Clemson going. OSU took the lead with a few minutes left in the game, but Clemson drove the field at the end to make the winning score. Good game. If the targeting call wasn't called. Clemson would of punted and there would probably be a different outcome. The defense back that had the penalty was ejected and he is very good. His replacement had a rough game. I watched Georgia get the same kind of penalty in the South Carolina game that eventually cost Georgia the game. But the final thing that cost Georgia was when they didn't kick the field goal when they could have at the Carolina forty yard line.

Bad day today. Went to see the doctor. He said he is trying to get me into a rheumatologist, but they are all booked up until After February. So he did the next best thing he could do. He gave me a prescription for prednisone. That helps tremendously with the pain. I will be able to sleep tonight free from pain, but not free from trips to the bathroom to pee. The prednisone runs my blood sugar up so that causes me to pee more from high blood sugar. I had rahthe suffer from that than the pain. Good nigh all

Good morning everyone I am iin so much pain tis morning from the Polymyalgia. I am out of prednisone so I will have to wait until tomorrow to get a refill when the doctor's office is open. Well Clemson won last night after I went to bed. Clemson was losing when I went to bed. Don't know how it all played out as I was too tired to watch. But Clemson must have had a strong come back in the second half. Sorry Dan, maybe next year for Ohio State. I have to go so I will close wishing everyone a blessed day. RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. Lily is back with us for a few days. She has made herself at home. being bossy and making sure all the other fur babies behave. Last night Suzie made a statement about Lily's being here. When we went to bed, Suzie went into the family room to sleep, She doesn't care for Lily being here, but that is as much as she is going to say about the matter. It 44 degrees outside this morning. Winter hasn't been that cold this year. Yesterday it was in the high 60's. Today it will much of the same. The weatherman says it will be clear skies and warm temperatures today and rain will move it Sunday. Hope all is well with everyone. This morning is much the same for me. I woke up to low blood sugar which means the prednisone is wearing off. I stopped taking the prednisone a few days ago. So far the pain has been minimal but it is still there, but not so bad. The increase in the blood pressure medicine is working on me big time. I get dizzy if I stand up quickly or bend over with my head down. Think I am going to stop taking all the pills. Too many pills to keep up with and so many things going on with me right now, some of it must be side effects from all the meds. So as of this morning I have taken myself off the meds, so we will wait and see what happens, Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and n=be sure to tell somoen you love them.
