RE: Class A Troubleshooting for us Newbies

Call me. I can help you over the phone. I am a full-timer for 14 years. I am also a retired electrical engineer and professional troubleshooter. You might also need to locate a mobile RV Tech. Many are very good. Ask around and you might get some good recommendations.

RE: 50 amp surge protector

I had a Progressive on mine. A surge hit it and fortunately we were in the trailer and were able to save it when we smelled the burning wires. The Progressive didn’t stop squat. I am a retired electrical engineer and professional troubleshooter. I am curious on why you thought there was a surge. What did you find that caused the burning wires? If there had been a significant transient voltage spike you would not have time yourself To shut it off because the voltage spikes only last for microseconds or milliseconds. Please let me know some more details and especially what caused the burning wires. Thanks.

RE: Bigfoot tripping house GFI

Like said above make sure that the neutral and the ground wires are not connect together anywhere in your RV.

RE: AC toast?

You really need an amateur in conjunction with your voltmeter to do a better diagnosis. And like said above it could be just a starting capacitor. If I were you I would get an experienced electrician or air conditioner guy to check it out And determine exactly what is wrong.

RE: 2020 Escape Hybrid Towing Question

You can test the 12 V socket by plugging something in with the ignition in the various positions. You should also be able to check to see if the steering wheel is locked or not. When I tow my Honda the steering wheel is unlocked and the 12 V outlet is powered for my Brake Buddy.

RE: 12v batteries not receiving charge from shore power.

Did you check the 120 V circuit breaker that feeds the converter? On that connection you previously tightened remove it and clean it up and then reinstall. You may call me if you wish and I might be able to help you over the phone. I am a retired professional electrical troubleshooter.

RE: Did I ruin my water heater, please help!

My water heater only works off of 120 V AC or Propane. 12 V is required for the circuit board. I would suggest that you keep your camper plugged into your house power while you are parked there so that your converter will keep your battery charged. Your water heater should remain full of water unless you specifically drained it.

RE: To 12v batteries or 24v batteries, this is a question.

If you’re interested in maximizing the capacity check which configuration will give you the most amp hours. Otherwise no difference electrically.

RE: 2020 Jayco GrayHawk 29MVP. Do I need to add Surge Protector

If I were you I would buy the best one that Progressive Industries has. This is no place to skimp. I have seen a case where the underground cable from one pesto to another failed and caused high voltage which caused a lot of damage. If you ever think that you might get another RV in the future that would be 50 A I would get the 50 amp version from PI and use a 3250 amp dog bone adapter. The 50 amp receptacles on the pedestal are usually in better shape than the 30s. Sometimes the 30 amp pedestal receptacles are so worn that they caused an excessive amount of heat at that point. You may call me on the phone if you want to talk about it further.

RE: Electronics repair shop needed

Have you taken it apart to see if it has any replaceable components? Some circuits may be potted. I would be inclined to buy a new unit as mentioned above.

RE: Tongue Weight Calculation

The total weight of the trailer is the sum of the tongue and the two axles.

RE: Metal tab on surge protector??

If I were you I would get the 50 amp version for two reasons. One you might get a larger unit in the future and two the 50 amp connection in the pedestal is not as worn out as the 30 amp one. Then use a 30 to 50 Dogbone adapter. This would give you a better set up and provide for the future rather than just a 30 amp set up.

RE: Fan Motor 2007 Mandalay 40B

If I were you I would see how about getting the motor rebuilt. A good hydraulic shop should be able to take apart put a new seals and make it good as new.

RE: Lippert 18v Awning

My big awning works off of 12 V has a Torginol Spring on one end like a garage door and maybe that is not adjusted properly. If your drill Battery works and the onboard battery does not it might mean that the onboard battery is not big enough or else the awning is not adjusted properly. Without me being there and helping you troubleshoot it’s a little hard To offer suggestions. You may call me if you like and we can talk about it over the phone.
