RE: Rear Observation camera

I added a $70 wired camera to my 33' TT last year. For the price, it does the job but the screen resolution isn't the clearest. I initially mounted the camera to a bracket above the spare tire but excessive vibration on the road made it impossible to get a clear image. Mounting the camera directly to the bumper solved the vibration issue but the focal length on the camera is pretty short so I don't see cars 4-5 car lengths back well...they are just a blob on the screen. For highway observation, my set up is adequate but I don't rely on it as a back camera. I don't have any perspective on where the left and right edges of the trailer and there's no sound so the DW still backs me in when kids are present at the CG.

RE: How to improve 2017 Ford 350 head light output? See Update.

LED or HID in a housing made for halogen lights are illegal in all states, and enforcement is sporadic. If you want to put these kind of lights on your truck and stay legal then you would need to spend the coin and buy housing made for these types of bulbs(i.e. projectors) that do not scatter the beam. I'd really like to read this law from a legitimate source, not "the internet said". I work for a police department...it's not enforced at all here. I've also traveled at night in Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Arkansas and passed many police vehicles and I've haven't been pulled over. As I said, enforcement is sporadic and most new officers do not even know it is illegal. As far as your state, somewhere in the transportation code it will state that a vehicle has to abide by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 49 CFR Part 571 which is what makes putting a HID or LED bulb in a housing made for halogen illegal. You can put an LED bulb in an LED housing or HID bulb in an HID housing, but neither in a halogen only housing. CFR 49 571.108 Not to mention that it is a j@ckA$$ thing to do. I understand you need to see, but so do others on the road. I don't think they should be blinded just because someone is too cheap to do it right. If someone can afford a $40+k truck, then they can afford to spend the extra coin on the correct housing for the bulbs they want. I'll continue to be that jack ass. I don't get flashed, I don't get pulled over (I imagine because 95 percent of LEOs don't know how to interpret the DOT law you provided). I see far brighter LED lights on factory vehicles that my cheap retrofit. Sorry, but you can't convince me that a halogen bulb that has very little directionality is that much different from an LED. Maybe the lumen output is more of a factor with the brightness than the design of the bulb.

I swapped out the bulbs on my truck with Beamtech H13 LED bulbs a year ago and I have had no issues with them. They run $31/pair on eBay and are fairly easy to swap. There's a certain way they are supposed to go in t get the beam pattern distributed correctly and I had to turn my bucket adjusters down to keep from getting flashed all the time. Great lights and I'd do it again.

RE: Planning a trip Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Deadwood Etc.

We went to that area last year. I back-tracked to the Bad Lands and I'm glad we didn't stay the night near Wall. We stayed in Custer (Peacock Meadows CG) and the drive back to the Badlands wasn't that bad. We stayed an hour and a half tops in the Badlands and 2 hours in Wall...the kids just didn't seem to get into either place so we had plenty of time to go get dinner in Rapid City before heading back to Custer.

RE: Aluminum body Fords

Yes, I have a Larsen 2m 5/8 wave on a fender mount on my truck. You can also try this for a roof mount: https://youtu.be/vEIp-h6Qo34

RE: Electric Powered Trailer - Airstream

You wouldn't need a 7.3 if this idea actually works. A NA 4 cylinder in a vehicle that can handle the tongue weight of an Airstream can be used. I believe the idea here is the trailer won't put any towing load on the tow vehicle. I assume (like my Traxass electric RC truck) the trailer braking would also controlled by the motor and speed controller. I can see this technology helping tremendously when towing in strong head winds, at higher elevations and up steep grades.

RE: Rodent damage

Most of those threads don't apply here. Not sure how you would even begin to seal off an engine compartment.I guess he's putting a cat under the hood. Lol ! My mom had a 77 Corvette that sat for months one winter for some mechanical issue. When a neighbor opened the hood to look at it, an opossum had made a home in the radiator cowl.

RE: Mice in my camper

Find and seal off any holes larger than a quarter with copper mesh. Glue traps along the walls inside (no bait) will catch any inside. You may want to consider placing some bat stations with rodentcide in them outside the camper. I bought these bait stations and some consumer grade poison blocks and the mice went to town on them the first few weeks.

RE: New satellites are messing up our night sky

There are probably a ton more satellites you don't see but I'm on the other end of this spectrum. I enjoy seeing the International Space Station fly over, or tracking aircraft near me with my ADS-B receiver then going out at night to see if I can find them in the sky. But then again, I live in a large metro area and I'm used to see man made things in the sky constantly.

RE: When does a Pickup become a " Historical Vehicle"?

Missouri has historic vehicle registration for any vehicle over 25 years old. A mileage log is supposed to be in the vehicle and it cannot be driven over 1000 miles a year. My neighbor has his 73 C-10 registered as a historic vehicle.

RE: Galveston area things to do

Stop by the Seawolf Park and see the submarine and destroyer on display. I'm a bit partial to the USS Cavalla because my grandfather served on it during WW II.

RE: Absolute positively the worst road ever

I think the worst I've traveled is HWY 10 and 50 across SW Colorado. I don't think the highway was that bad of shape but there was absolutely nothing to look at other than miles and miles of abandoned railroad track. Those highways too were another Google Maps shortcut.

RE: Turning your truck like a skid steer

Bradley drivers know this as neutral or pivot steer. That could get ugly in tight areas if you aren't used to it.

RE: Camping Lights

This probably started a few years ago with the invention on those cheap, color changing LEDs. We tried the color changing LED strip light under the awning for a few seasons. I was more curious to see if a certain color light was easy on the eye but drew the least amount of bugs while we sat outside. Not sure what the issue is with leaving a porch light on, it's not like a directional flood light. It's an amber, low watt light that helps the occupants see those black steps when they enter the camper at night. But I'll agree that if you are in the camper for the night, the lights should go off.

RE: "Death Wobble" updated, fixed

I had the death wobble on my F-250 last year. It occurred with 29k miles on the odometer. My dealer applied the latest TSB at the time, replacing the stabilizer and adjusting the caster. Within a few weeks of that, I added an aftermarket dual stabilizer and replaced the tires. I'm at 40k miles now and haven't experienced the wobble again. If you look at the threads on the Ford Enthusiast forum, you will find guys with low mileage 2019s experiencing the issue. Not sure if Ford has really found a fix but the stabilizers always seem to be on back order for the TSB.
