RE: Be careful with engine block heaters

I wouldn't blame the block heater, I would blame the extension cord. If you are just using a residential electric cord plugged into a regular wall outlet that was most likely the problem. I was an electrician for 48 years. I saw this at a trucking company I worked for. There was no strain relief for the cord and over a period of time they started arching which caused the outlet and extension cord to melt. I finally convinced them to install twist lock plugs and that solved the problem.

RE: Parking permits in the GSMNP

Maybe we're doing something different in Pa,but for the past 20 + years the parks have been upgraded with more FHU sites and new bathouses and concession stands. And the rates are pretty reasonable. In Va state parks we paid $48 for a W&E hookups. In Pa you can get FHU for less than that. For state residents it's $27 for electric and $40 for FHU.They charge $4 more per nite for a Friday and Saturday but give a senior discount of $4.50 a nite.

RE: Photo test

Why isn't it possible to just copy and paste a photo on here? I am on other forums where I do that.

RE: Dometic toilet valave problem

I should have explained the water valve mount screws. When replacing the original valve, they supply 2 screws to secure the valve tightly to the housing. IF you did not install those screws, it is possible that when attempting to gently push the pedal down, the valve is moving rearward slightly and that causes the water valve to not open until you push more firmly, which will open the Ball valve slightly. If you did install the screws and you did NOT fiddle with the Foot lever, then I would think the new valve is defective and you need to replace it. Doug OK, that may be the issue. I did not install the screws because the old one did not have screws in it.

RE: Flying J / RV Lanes

We like the Flying J RV lanes too. They have a phone app which shows every station and which ones have RV lanes. If you have Good Sam or Flying J card, you get 5 cents of gas or 8 cents off diesel. Once you get off the interstates there are no Flying J's. That's one reason I got a diesel with an auxilary tank. Now I can use truck stops.

Dometic toilet valave problem

We have a 2015 Keystone Cougar TT with a Dometic toilet. Must have not gotten all the water out of the valve and it froze and broke. I got a replacement valve and out it in. The old valve worked by stepping on it all the way to flush and part way to fill. The new valve opens the flush mechanism no matter how you step on the flush valve. Any suggestions?

RE: Battery operated fan quesiton ?

If you have any Makita power tools, they make 2 fans that are powered by their batteries.I have the bigger one and it works well but won't run 8 hours on one battery. The smaller one would probably run longer.Batteries charge in about an hour. I keep several spare batteries so it's no problem. When one runs low I just slap in another one.

RE: RV'ing couple missing

My first thought reading about this was that they were blindly following a GPS / /cell phone / Waze maps something or other. I would like to know what the sequence of events were. My thought too. We recently took a trip to Texas from Pa.On the way to one campground, the GPS wanted to take us dows dirt roads, twice. I said no. We stayed on the road we were on and the campground was on that road!I always look at maps before we travel any section of our trip. The only time I really use the GPS is when traveling around large cities.

RE: U.S. Forest Service closures

The article is from a camping forum, not the media.I like when someone gets to the point. They gave us information we didn't have before. The forest service is tasked with many things such as managing mining and logging leases, recreation and keeping our forests healthy. I enjoy Forest Service Campgrounds and generally think they do a great job. I'd like to know why have they closed so many campgrounds? Was it money or other reasons? I too would like to see more federal campgrounds open. While I enjoy my Senior Pass, I think they could raise their rates a little to cover the costs of campground improvements or even building new campgrounds.

RE: Interesting new EV travel trailer from Airstream.

I wonder how much heavier it is with the batteries? Also, all electric appliances are going to eat up a lot of power. Anything with a heating element draws a lot of current. It would seem propane to power the stove, water heater and furnace would be a better choice.

RE: Reservations at federal parks

I wanted to make 2 reservations at one federal park in Arkansas. One for an over night going down and one coming back. At that park I could only make 1 reservation per call. So I called back the same day and made the 2nd reservation. You normally call to make reservations? Yes, I prefer being able to talk to someone.

RE: How to Find Parks?

It depends on what type of campgrounds you want to stay in. We prefer State and Federal Campgrounds because you are not packed in like sardines and you get to have more of a wilderness experience. Many of them have hookups. Sometimes just electric, but other also have water and a few have FHU. But we get by very well with just electric. With our holding tanks and by managing water usage we can go 5 days without dumping tanks.Federal parks include Forest Service,BLM,Army Corps of Engineers (COE)and National Parks. Most of the COE campgrounds are on lakes. Many have sites right on the water so if you like to canoe or kayak you can launch right from your site. Also these state and federal campgrounds are cheaper than commercial campgrounds. With the Federal Senior Pass ( must be 62 or older) we have paid as little as $7.50 a night for a site with water and electric. Or $19.00 a night for electric and water lakeside. Plan where you would like to go,then search for state or federal campgrounds in those areas.
