RE: How much 5th Wheel can I tow with my truck

Thanks for everyone's input so far. I'll look at 5th wheels 11000-12000LB with a Pin weight of 25% or less. I should be ok then. I'm looking forward to the Tampa show. I've been to a couple big shows up North but never one that advertises having trams to get people around if needed. It must be huge!

How much 5th Wheel can I tow with my truck

Currently I have a Forest River Hemisphere GLX that weighs in the neighborhood of 8500LB dry and about 9500LB loaded. I do not travel with water other than a couple of gallons in the black tank to slosh around. It tows fine and my truck handles it with ease but I'm not very happy with it (poorly and cheaply built). I'm beginning to look at new 5th Wheels but I have no idea what my truck can handle and we all know how a dealer will tell you anything to make a sale. I'm not in a position to change trucks for another three years so I have to stick with the truck I have. I understand that a Dually Diesel is a preferable tow vehicle but not in the cards for me right now. As for the math, everything gets so confusing to me that I need some help. Can someone please give me an idea of the dry weight and max weight of a 5th wheel I should be looking at? Also, what else should I be paying attention to on the sticker of a new 5th wheel? I know I need to look at Pin weight but what else? I'll be adding the same amount of stuff I carry in the rig I have now so please keep that in mind too. We're going to the Tampa RV Supershow on January 16th to browse. Below are the specs of my truck. Thank you for any help you can give me. From the manual 2017 Ram Crew Cab with 6'6" box. 6.4 Hemi with 3.73 rear end GVWR 10,800 Max Payload 4010LB GCWR 19,900 Max Trailer Weight 12,640 From the Stickers on my truck GAWR Front 5500LB GAWR Rear 7000LB Max Payload 3900LB My weight additions Me 225LB Wife 130LB Spray in Bed Liner 50LB Folding Tonneau Cover 60LB 31 Gallon tank = 186LB when full. B&W Patriot 16K hitch with rails weighs about 175LB total. Then figure I'm going to be adding "Stuff", about 1000LB. If I forgot anything let me know please and Thank you!

RE: Chrysler UConnect

$14.99 monthly or $149.99 yearly payment Seems like a lot of money to spend for something that doesn't work very well.

RE: Washer/Dryer worth it?

We don't have a washer/dryer in our 5th wheel but it's prepped for them. We are wintering in Florida for the first time this year and I've asked many people at the resort we're at about their thoughts. It's about 50/50 love it or hate it. Those that love it either are older and don't want to be bothered using the resort laundry facility or they don't want the hassle and added expense of using pay machines (This I don't understand because you can buy a lot of loads of laundry for the cost of those machines). Those that dislike their washer/Dryer all say the same thing. They don't hold much and laundry has to be done just about every day. Because we sometimes boon dock and other times camp where we don't have water hookups and use our Fresh Water holding tank, we chose not to have them.

RE: "Lite" 5th wheels

"Lite" usually means Lite on Quality, Lite on Durability and often times means a lighter hit to your wallet but there are real problems and concerns if you go this route. I know. I bought a "Lite" 5th wheel new a year and a half ago and it's falling apart. So far I've had to stain and finish the dinette table, cut 1/4" off one leg of a dinette chair so it doesn't rock, tried to match a stain to hide the paper thin veneer on the MDF cabinets that has rubbed away, re-adjusted interior doors so they would close (wall flexing during towing is the culprit), Put gorilla tape over worn out areas where it rubs when opening/closing the trifold couch (this happened after using it as a bed maybe 20 times), Window treatments falling off etc. Then there's the lack of wall thickness and insulation that not only effects heating and cooling but there's no sound dampening either so you can hear everyone outside and everyone outside can hear you. These are just a few of the issues I've had in the one year of ownership of my "Lite" 5th wheel. Never again!

I also have the Bakflip G2. I haven't had any problems. I do use the straps and buckle it.

RE: Cabinet Quality

My FW, on profile page, has solid maple doors and drawers, while the cabinets themselves may be MFD. My Yellowstone FW was the upper end of Gulf Steam, when I purchased it new. It had a retail price of 40K at that time (a great FW for the price,IMO). I am happy to say, most of my wood, or wood trim, does not look cheap. https://i.imgur.com/QWTYAuRl.jpg Hope you are still enjoying the warmer Southern temps Rob! Happily Holidays to you! Jerry Happy Holidays to you too Jerry! We're loving our time in Florida. It feels a little strange being in warm weather for Christmas and New Year though.

Cabinet Quality

At what price range do you get real wood cabinets and doors/drawer fronts instead of the MDF with a wood look lamination. It's so cheap looking.

RE: Typical problem we all see in RV parks.

In the park we are at in Florida, we are surrounded by trucks with diesel engines and loud pipes. We also have numerous Harley's that have pipes that make them louder than factory levels. Yesterday the guy next to me let his diesel truck idol for 40 minutes before leaving. It's annoying yes, but it sure is less annoying than shoveling snow every day, which is what I would be doing if I didn't come to Florida this winter. If making a choice, I'm picking the loud trucks and motorcycles every time over the snow!

RE: You don't need it.

I will add that I went South last month from NY to Florida towing our 5th wheel with my 2017 Ram 3500 with the 6.4 Hemi. I worried some about going down Fancy Gap On I-77 entering North Carolina from Virginia (a vertical descent of 1,289 ft. over 6.2 miles. There's three runaway truck ramps. The first part of the grade is moderately steep but becomes more aggressive about halfway down). With Tow/Haul engaged, I downshifted manually to 4th gear and road down the hill at 55mph and never touched the breaks once. I was relieved when at the bottom but also impressed with the Ram's performance.

RE: Route to Florida

Our traffic here in Florida has tripled since last month. Be careful out there the interstates are crazy! You aren't joking! People drive like idiots down here and I'm not referring to Floridians only. I've almost been taken out twice since we arrived on November 25th and there's been one accident 1.5 miles South of where we are near Titusville that was a quadruple fatal. I've yet to see a Highway patrol car anywhere on the Interstate near me. I now use US 1 and the local roads to get to where I need to go.

RE: Water line burst

My 2 cents is before you do anything, try and find the person that was kind enough to shut your water off and thank them. Not everyone would have done that. One time I noticed 4 people standing at the roadside of a camper just watching. When I went over to see what they were looking at, I noticed water pouring out. I walked past them and turned the spigot off. Good point! Thing is, being on several forum types, for a length of time, I usually can tell a lot about other posters character, by their posts/responses. I knew RobWNY would help, in this case turn water off. I feel like I know many forum folks, some I consider friends, even though I've never met them. Jerry Thank you Jerry, I think of you as a friend as well even though we have never met in person. I have received a great deal of help and guidance from you and you have saved me from spending money needlessly and from making many mistakes. I like to offer "my 2 cents" in hopes of being able to be helpful to others. It's the only way to pay it forward in a meaningful way.

RE: Propane Tank Gauge,recomendations please

I use one of these. A full 30 pound tank weighs 55 pounds. Approximately 25 pounds when empty. Whatever it weighs on the scale, tells me how much propane I have left. https://i.imgur.com/NGpN8oIl.jpg
