RE: US 20 East to West Yellowstone

Decent road with good side trips if you are not in a hurry. Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are called the Niagra Falls of the west and well worth the diversion off US 20.

RE: Crecent City via 199 Grant's Pass or 299 Redding

While you asked about cutting across from I 5 at Grants Pass or Redding to Crescent City, and I agree that 199 is certainly preferred, have you thought of leaving I 5 south at Cottage Grove taking Oregon 38 to Reedsport and south on US 101? I can't compare I 5 and 101 on the Oregon Coast for scenery and camping options.

RE: Rv loan rates!

My current RV offered an additional $5k off if I financed through them. When I read the contract, there was no prepayment penalty so I financed it for one payment and then paid it off. For the $170 interest I paid, I saved $5k off the selling price. It's not always about interest rates or monthly payments, it's what does it really cost.

RE: Camping in New Zealand

We did it years ago. The rv we had was a smaller right hand drive diesel. If you have never driven on the left hand side, with lots of traffic circles and 1 1/2 lane roads you are in for a treat. It is a wonderful country with welcoming people.

RE: Opinions on Yellowstone trip

There are several commercial camps around Thermopolis. I wished I could remember the name of the one we stayed at. It was old school and the hot springs were scattered along the river. We went to the state park also which was just ok.

RE: Help me plan my trip! North Dakota (TRNP) & Minnesota (VNP)

The south unit of TRNP at Medora has several commercial campgrounds which fit your needs. The north unit, about 65 miles away, not so much. The north unit is one of the least visited national parks and the park campground is considered primative but I liked it.

RE: 5th Wheel Friendly RV Parks I-5 Norcal/ Southern Oregon

Any of the Oregon State campgrounds along your route are top notch. Valley of the Rogue State Park near Gold Hills is just off I-5 and has all services.

RE: California Redwoods Campground

There are several areas of redwoods in NorCal: near Crescent City, Klamath River, and Avenue of the Giants south of Eureka. State campgrounds for the most part are closed in March. My favorite commercial campground is Ancient Redwoods RV in the Avenue of the Giants near Redcrest. It is closed until the 1st of April. Expect rain and fog at this time of year.

RE: Help with trip planning from San Diego to San Francisco

Regarding your last stop, Pismo-Avila-Morro Bay. Another possibility might be San Simeon State Park near Cambria. The Washburn section is called primative because it has vault toilets and water faucets. Wonderful scenery, Hearst Castle is open again, and elephant seal rookery. Access back to 101 just south of Cambria.

RE: motorhome on pch

I have driven the central and northern sections with a total length of 52 feet. The section north of Cambria is a challenge but doable with care. The vista points are all on the south bound side and few will accommodate your total length. I would only do this section mid week. The northern section is more restrictive and the section north of Westport is just not worth the trouble. Go inland at Fort Bragg to Willits. The Oregon coast is no problem. Highway 1 and 101 makes PCH one of the great drives in the country.

RE: Alaska - 2023

I echo the suggestion that you not try to make loads of reservations. In all my trips north, I have never stayed 10 days in either Fairbanks or Anchorage. Allowing flexibility for weather, or fires, or special events is important. This year has had many rain days this summer. Some years has been extra smokey. My last trip up, the smoke was so bad I was going to divert to Dawson City but the road was closed due to a fire..so I backtracked to British Columbia and Alberta which are both wonderful in their own right.

RE: Driving from Ventura to Palm Springs through Pasadena

My preferred route is to take the 118 from Ventura through Simi Valley to the 210, mid week if possible. I leave Ventura after 9am to hit Pasadena after the morning rush. At that point, rush hour traffic is in bound and I am going out bound.

RE: Part of Alaska Highway closes due to road washout

It is long way back to the 37 if you are going north. Camping at Muncho Lake is a good alternative. Those going south, the Cassiar is a preferred direction anyways. Stuff happens in the north, be prepared.

RE: Fuel cost in your area

Ventura, Ca. Regular $5.77, Diesel $6.45 after the 3 cent increase in tax applied today.
