RE: What did you do to your Camper Today?

Started packing up for a trip to the White River in Arkansas in a couple of weeks. I’m going at the end of the week my company is doing layoffs. I’ll either have a job to come back to, or be free to stay as long as I want, chasing monster brown trout. It’s a win either way!

RE: Do NOT use Flex Seal on your camper roof!

Yeah. As others have stated, it’s fine in areas not exposed to UV. But it’s just rubber and degrades rapidly in UV. Even the non-spray version will break down. Not as fast, because it has more volume to surface area, but it will eventually. Best to keep an eye on it!!

RE: Truck, and truck camper insurance questions.

I have State Farm. Haven’t had to get towed, BUT I had a hair raising, multi-week exchange with them after an elderly lady backed into my camper at a gas station and nearly pull the rear jack off along with half of the rear of the camper. When I first got the camper I was told my policy covered it along with the truck. When I called to report the accident I was also told it was covered along with the truck. Then the back-and-forth began with me being told alternately that it was and was not covered by my policy depending on which agent at what office I spoke to. The main office told me it was not covered and they wouldn’t be able to do anything for me. Thankfully my local agent is awesome I was able to get to the bottom of it and my camper was indeed 100% covered. So I would advise making sure your agent understands exactly what kind of camper it is and you were absolutely positive that it is covered by your insurance. The main problem I encountered was that most of the people I spoke to either thought it was a trailer for some reason or a cap. This despite the fact that I had sent multiple photographs of the rig while reporting in the accident online.

Do NOT use Flex Seal on your camper roof!

Figured I’d post this since I had a troubling conversation with my repair guy a couple weeks back when I picked up my camper after it was repaired following a minor collision last fall. We were discussing my long battle with a skylight leak in the bathroom and I mentioned that at one point I used flex seal spray as an emergency measure until I could do a proper repair with new butyl tape and Dicor and eternabond. He got all exited and told me that the “flex seal is great stuff! That’s the way to go!” And he used it on his parents’ leaky shed roof and its holding just fine. I nodded and told him it’s great for an emergency but from my firsthand experience, it becomes brittle, cracks, and eventually peels off when it’s been exposed to ultraviolet light for more than a few weeks. He apparently wasn’t aware of that. Ive been thinking about that conversation for a few weeks now and figured I’d post a thread about it to inform others who might be tempted to use flex seal as a permanent solution on camper roofs. DON’T! Even though the tv commercial shows a guy sealing a skylight, Even though your repair guy or dealer might tell you it’s great, Even though a website or blog extols it’s virtues, It is NOT a permanent solution!!!!! Emergency patch? Sure. But it WILL become brittle, crack, and peel off in a few weeks under UV light (sunlight). So please, PLEASE, don’t even think about using this stuff I place of lap sealant or eternabond. This has been a public service announcement. We now return to your regularly scheduled program.

RE: Replacing ceiling in Lance shower?

D3500ram, It looks ok the last 2 photos like the tape is under the skylight with caulking along the edge? Is that correct?

RE: Replacing ceiling in Lance shower?

Thanks. I’ll look into that FRP. I finally got the leak under control. Took lots of experimenting and I learned the following that may be of use for others: 1) caulking needs to be checked and replaced FREQUENTLY in hostile climates like southeast Texas. 2) spray on “Flex Seal” is ok for emergency repairs, but after just a couple of months becomes brittle, cracks, and peels off. It’s useless for long term! 3) using butyl tape AND lap sealant AND eternabond is the way to go! For the ceiling I’m currently eyeballing this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Glasliner-4-ft-x-8-ft-White-090-FRP-Wall-Board-MFTF12IXA480009600/100389836?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&mtc=Shopping-B-F_D30-G-D30-30_27_PANELING-Generic-NA-Feed-LIA-NA-NA-&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_D30-G-D30-30_27_PANELING-Generic-NA-Feed-LIA-NA-NA--71700000052659303-58700005045840622-92700044042640858&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2rDBwoT57QIVUPDACh1k9wkxEAQYBCABEgLsRvD_BwE Seems like it might be better for a shower where humidity and moisture are a constant potentl threat to simple luan.

Replacing ceiling in Lance shower?

The luan around the skylight and vent is in pretty sorry shape after a leak that soaked it through a couple of times. I’m thinking of replacing the ceiling luan with plastic or fiberglass sheeting and wonder if there are any pros or cons? Has anyone done this and is willing to offer any thoughts?

RE: What did you do to your Camper Today?

Picked it up from the repair shop after nearly 3 months of waiting. All the damage caused by the lady backing into me a d nearly taking the rear Jack with her is repaired and the camper is ready for its next (hopefully less traumatic) adventure. Happy holidays to all!

RE: What did you do to your Camper Today?

Got word from my repair shop that the parts he needs to repair my Lance after the accident last month are coming in a few at a time. He’s hoping to get it started soon and hopefully get it back to me as soon as possible. Thankfully, the insurance company is covering it because it’s a $9,500.00 job!

RE: Mildew on popup tent insides

Dehumidifier is tops! I use one all the time in my camper due to the heavy, moist air here in southeast Texas. Also keep a bigger version going in my garage to protect my boat trailer and tools from rust.

RE: Northern Lite 10-2000 stolen in Seattle

That sucks eggs. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I’m 2 weeks into dealing with my insurance company for damage done to my camper by another driver. You need to keep on them for sure. It’s amazing what they don’t know!

RE: How Much Stuff is in Your Truck Camper

Not much really since I unpack after every trip. I like to have just the necessities like clothes, some cooking ware, emergency supplies and equipment, some tools, and whatever I’m bringing for fishing or hiking or doing geology fieldwork (usually all of the above). Even so, it can get sort of crowded, so I always try to figure out what I could have left home for next time!

RE: What a way to start a trip

And yet another update. My current agent is AWESOME. He found out that I DO have insurance as I was told and understood all along. The main office had filed it incorrectly. So...back in action and going to be able to get it fixed or replaced as needed. This just keeps getting weirder. 2020, you’re killing me!!!!

RE: What a way to start a trip

That’s what my previous agent told me. That’s not what State Farm is saying now. Got my current agent working on it to see what he can do.

RE: What a way to start a trip

Well 2020 continues to suck eggs. My insurance called me this morning and there’s good news and bad news. Good news is the other driver is liable for damage to my vehicle. Bad news is my idiot local agent wrote up the policy wrong so my truck camper is not actually covered. This will be a very expensive and painful lesson but some other good news is that the fishing is pretty good. RE: What a way to start a trip

Thanks for the link! Here goes: https://i.imgur.com/9hy20eUl.jpg Here’s what I saw after the crunch sound. Not pretty. https://i.imgur.com/zYk6b75l.jpg Here’s what I was able to do with my ever-present ratchet straps and some clear tape. https://i.imgur.com/PHDfNjMl.jpg And most importantly, here’s what makes it all worthwhile. I’ll be spending the next week bumming around some of my favorite spots in Wyoming. Hopefully the insurance business goes smoothly and the repairs go semi-quickly! Full report when I get back home next week.

RE: What a way to start a trip

Good suggestions. I already started looking around for a place close to where I live (hopefully). Haven’t heard back yet. I’ll call again tomorrow then broaden the search. Also, didn’t think about diminished value. Will definitely ask about that! Thank you! Got to where I’m headed and am settled in and about to eat dinner. Definitely great to be out again! Looking to post photos but it seems I need an external photo account or something. This will take some doin’.

RE: What a way to start a trip

Thanks and yeah it most definitely sucks but that’s what insurance is for and at least the camper is still functional for the rest of my trip.

What a way to start a trip

I’m trying posting this again since the first time it didn’t seem to work. Long story short I took off yesterday from my trip to Wyoming on my first trip in 3 1/2 years. Yesterday was quiet and this morning I needed gas so I went against my own rule and pulled into a very busy gas station in Pueblo Colorado. Are usually avoid busy stations because of all the confusion and chaos. As I was pulling into the pond a woman backing out of a parking spot in front of the convenient store collided with my rear passenger side and tore the jack almost completely off. The rear of the truck camper separated from the side panel almost halfway up. With a ratchet strap and some gorilla tape I was able to secure it enough to travel. Her passenger side bumper and rear panel and light are trash to but fortunately everybody is OK. We have the same insurance company and the representative told me it sounds like a clear case of her being at fault so liability will cover repairs. So my trip goes on but when I get home I need to bring it in and find out how long it will take and how much insurance will cover. I will post photographs when I have access to my computer but right now I’m using my phone at a rest stop. Be safe out there!
