RE: Towing capacity vs max cargo weight rating

Just get a truck with a big enough RAWR and head on down the road. Even if it has a weak engine and transmission, or is subject to frame cracking. RAWR rules! I read it on the Internet.

RE: Making Oil

What vehicle? What engine.
Read it on a Ford Forum where is was mentioned as a matter of fact with Ecoboost engines. People were saying things like, "I towed 1,800 miles and only "Gained a small amount of oil". The reason I am not mentioning engine and vehicle is that it was not me that reported the gain. I wondered if others had heard of this.

RE: Making Oil

More common than I thought, especially among the diesel folks. The reports I read were of turbocharged gasoline fueled pickups after heavy towing.

RE: Making Oil

Your more likely to have fuel wash in the oil with long idling as the engine never reached operating temp.
We used to have this with air-cooled VW's back in the day. They would not get warm enough in Midwestern Winters.
The comments I saw recently concerned towing.

Making Oil

I see on another forum where owners report of showing more oil on their dipstick at the end of a long hard drive than at the beginning. Mostly with turbocharged engines. Anything to this or explanation?

RE: Towing capacity vs max cargo weight rating

What if the driver being sued is towing a 15,000 pound model trailer behind a pickup rated for 8,000 pounds? Would "debris" still be needed? What if he had just been on the Internet asking how to tame a nasty trailer sway condition? Too many variables for the armchair lawyers.

RE: Towing capacity vs max cargo weight rating

To quote Perry Mason, "There is what is legal and there is what is right". All the legal bs will not undo damage caused by overloaded or improperly operated machinery. The hitch pin that I use is "rated" to tow 20,000 pounds. Is that my rating? That is what the rear axle rating folks are doing when they hang their hat on one component's capacity rather than the "Gross" or total rating assigned by the manufacturer.

RE: Towing capacity vs max cargo weight rating

...snip.... they leave it up to you to weigh your truck and calculate what you can put on the rear axle?
Bingo!
Or, ask a bunch of strangers on the Internet.

RE: Towing capacity vs max cargo weight rating

Hello all!
Can someone clarify something for me? If a truck's max gooseneck trailer loaded weight is 15,100 lbs (as per manufacturer towing guide - it is a Ford) - how can the max cargo weight rating be 1792 lbs?
...snip.....
What is the model of the truck? What is the "actual" scaled weight of the truck? What are the numbers on the yellow door frame sticker? What is the weight and weight distribution on the trailer?
You have all the answers, or can get them for ten bucks at you local scales. People on here like to give opinions. Is that all you want?

RE: Towing capacity vs max cargo weight rating

Don't worry about GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) That only takes into consideration the whole vehicle. Look at Rear axle rating and disregard Front axle, engine, frame, brakes, steering, transmission and other components that make up the rest of the tow vehicle. Big enough rear end and you are good to tow. (Sarcasm off now)
I repeat, "Look at all the ratings" as a starting point. Then weigh to verify.

RE: Towing capacity vs max cargo weight rating

What may be confusing the OP is that there are multiple ratings involved with tow vehicles. Some will say that you can exceed one but not the other. Some are related, some are not. I don't plan on exceeding any. Not payload. Not tow rating. Not rear axle. Not front axle. Not tire ratings. Not hitch ratings. Not frontal area restrictions. And so forth. I think most manufacturer rating are conservative except for Tow Rating.
It will take a little effort but most of these can be found on the truck itself or on the Ford towing guide.

A few in the RGV (Rio Grande Valley of Texas) have been given the first shot. Not nearly enough. Not me, unfortunately.

RE: GMC/Silverado 2500 Gas

I have had three Silverado 2500HD's 2007, 2009, 2013. All were capable of towing 8,000 pound or more trailers. All had the 6.0 GAS engine. I emphasize GAS, because they love it. Lots of it.

Can the new Chevy Silverados with the 4.3L V6 really how over 9000 pounds?
Silverado 2500HD? Yes. 1500? not likely.

RE: Great time to Sell Your RV!

Before anyone buys any rv they should try to get a camping spot......they are virtually non existent but a trip to a campground will show 1/2e empty......the reservation system needs to be overhauled.....
Good point. Some government park managers act as though they would rather manage a half empty park instead of a full one. When I questioned one, he said, "The computer woman manages reservations and she is off this week". The park showed full online but half full in person.

RE: Requirements for towing and setup of a TT 3500lbs or less

One thing that is necessary is to verify the weights with a trip to the scales. ON ANY TRAILER.
You mentioned weighing the trailer. Someone else mentioned that also, I am assuming by verifying weights you are referring to getting the tongue weight right(which affects sway) is that correct? ....snip....
Correct. Also, be aware of the effect of holding tank weight. 400 pounds of fresh and waste water in front of or behind the axle will really affect the balance.
Don't forget to have them include an electric tongue jack in the deal. It can add years to your travel enjoyment.

RE: Air Conditioner does not act right "some times"

When mine does something similar, it is usually when the outside temp is close to inside. It starts and stops, stutters and blows. I think it has something to do with sensing cool air which starts the fan but stops when it discovers it is just outside temperature. Or something like that. What is the ambient temperature and target temp?
Mine works perfectly when outside is ten or more degrees warmer than thermostat is calling for.
