A case for electronic balls and strikes.....

During current WS...catcher scoots over a bit to outside edge of plate and places his glove there. Pitch lands at the opposite side of the plate in catcher's glove, but ABSOLUTELY IN THE STRIKE ZONE. Ump calls it a ball. Smoltz says umps do not call this a strike...just because. I watched a lot of SF Giants this season and saw this same scenario many times over the season. We all know umps have their own personal version of what is the strike zone....over and above the rule book...in addition to my first sentence. So what is the big deal....why am I posting this. Remember the old science fiction book or movie where they go back in time and some dope smashes a butterfly....and somehow it affects everything going forward. A missed called strike can change the outcome of an inning or the game later on.

RE: Hiring Bernie Madoff as a trust company??

How about appointing a co-trustee. Nothing can be done unless both agree how to do things. Ask your trust attorney about this. (You do see a live trust or elder attorney....don't you) ?

Giants/Dodgers called swinging strike...end of game

So Flores swing did not appear to me to be much of an attempt. I looked in the MLB rule book and did not find anything to define a swinging strike. What is the rule....if any. Just the ump's judgement ? TIA

Rational Thinking

Not sure this goes in humor or elsewhere, but here goes: "Tell people there is an invisible person in the sky who created the universe and the vast majority will believe you. Tell them the paint is wet.....and they have to touch it, to be sure" G. Carlin

RE: Erratic fuel gauge

Thanks....had not thought of that. I am an automotive/handyman DUNCE. Guess a rubber mallet and not a regular hammer ? TIA

Erratic fuel gauge

Not working well. Noticed after a right-to-the-top fill up last week. Gauge reads full while traveling 200-300 miles. At rest it drops to 3/4 full. This is a 2003 National Dolphin LX6355, W22, 8.1L engine. Not an Actia dash, don't know the mfr. Is there a way to diagnose with a code reader and possibly fix without going into the fuel tank and replacing the sender/float ? Thanks for listening

RE: One more baseball question.....

OK,OK.....I realize this was pie-in-the-sky. But no comments at all ? So fan seating will be odd in the outfield...but 3 huge TV screens will fix that. Outfielders play in close..trouble. They play back..trouble. MLB rules will soon eliminate infielders from playing on outfield grass, so no 4 outfielders. Oh, I forgot about owners giving up 100,000 square feet of space for concessions and parking. This might be the death knell....

RE: One more baseball question.....

I was thinking......more inside-the-park home runs, more triples. More insane catches in the outfield. This is something Bill Veeck might have done.

One more baseball question.....

Are there restrictions on how an owner can design his park ? If it was me in charge, it would be 600 feet to center field and 500 feet down the lines.

RE: A basketball question....or two

aftermath.....players enter the key BEFORE it leaves the shooter's hand.
akaPedro 08/08/21 06:51pm Around the Campfire

How about 11,000 athletes and why rock climbing, surfing and skate boarding.....among other questionable events? Guess I am just an old fogey but why not get back to track and field, wrestling, etc. from the 50's ?

RE: A basketball question....or two

Is the EuroStep legal .....back in the 50's and 60's ?

A basketball question....or two

When I played in the 50's and 60's....you were not allowed to enter the key until AFTER the free throw shooter HAD RELEASED THE BALL. Now, I see players disregarding the rule and refs do not call this out...except one time a game and I can go months before seeing another call of this type. Am I an old, outdated fuddy-duddy who wants to see players stick to the rules (even tho no one plays by the rules anyway, sports or otherwise) Don't get me started on walking, travelling or steps whilst going in for a layup.....

ANOTHER baseball question......

Runner on a base. Pitcher throws ball in front of the plate and catcher blocks or catches it. Ball is scuffed and either the ump or catcher throws a new ball back to the pitcher Oops, ball goes over pitcher's head and runner advances a base. Is time out automatically called for the new ball....or does it make a difference if the catcher.....or ump.....threw back to the pitcher ? TIA

RE: Another baseball question........

So why does the catcher constantly look up at the batter's face ?
akaPedro 05/23/21 09:01am Around the Campfire
Another baseball question........

Batter is in the box. Catcher moves his eyes up and sideways to the batter's face. Is he trying to see if the batter is looking down to see the catcher's hand signals ? I have read that a batter with sunglasses can somehow see the catcher's signals in a reflection......but not in this instance. TIA

Baseball strike zone...

Been watching the imposed "strike zone" box... on the tube for awhile. It appears to encompass the area between the knees and the belt. I thought it should be between the knees and the letters. ?? Not sure it stretches between a batter 5 foot and a batter 6 foot. What am I missing ?

Pine tar on baseball bats

Was watching spring training and see pine tar about 1/2 way up the bat....not near the bottom to help grip.....which I thought was the purpose of pine tar. What am I missing ?
