RE: Ram Sales Increasing

had a ram one time ,58k garage kept doors rusted about a foot up on each side ,ram said tuff cookie , never again. Neighbor has a 2011 F150. The bed started rotting at 5 years old with 60k. It's now 8 years old and looks terrible. I guess Ford is OK with their product looking like that on the road. And my wife's 13 Explorer has paint peeling off the aluminum hood as well as the rear door inner seems starting to rust! I'm done with Fords at this point!,,,

RE: Sequoia Can't Really Tow Anything (Family of 6). Am I Right?

For a new TV I would suggest a Ram Mega Cab! Plenty of room for 6 if you get the bench seat in the front. Not to mention a lot of room in the back seat for a dog to lay on the floor.

RE: Generator question

I only had my ONAN do an overheat shut down one time.. Trust me when I say it was justified I use a Gen-Turi when parked and only one time has it ever been so hot that I had to wear gloves to re-bag it.. (Same time) and the generator was OFF for some time ONAN (and one assumes others) send ERROR codes obd-1 style (But easier) I don't know how many of you have ever read OBD-1 error codes but here is how (part of it) You can either use a code reader key or the famous bent paper clip to short two terminals on the OBD port. then turn switch to on and count the flashes of the check engine light. On the ONAN generators you either tap or long press (Forget which) the stop button and then read the flashes of the indicator light Then you go to your handy dandy Manual.pef and look up the error code (you did download a copy of the manual to your hard drive and save a backup to your external drive right :) ) if it's overheat it will tell you. Same for out of fuel. low oil and several others though the error code can be Cryptic. You tap the stop and it will give you the code. If you hold it it will start the fuel pump Thanks.. and I'm now officially kicking myself because I knew that if you hold it it starts the fuel pump.. Alas the indicator lamp on my dash is not doing anything (I hear the thing start via an open window when I use it so long as I start it BEFORE the main engine) any idea how hard that light is to replace? The light is not easy to replace, it is easier to replace the switch. You can buy it from Amazon for 10-20 bucks. On another note, check that you don't have a loose wire behind the switch. I have seen that more frequently than thever light burnt Thanks. That is an option I ,at do if that's what it turns out to be. Unfortunately I'll have to wait to see if and when it happens again. Our next trip is to cedar point and we are leaving around 3 a.m.. coming home we will be leaving around 9 a.m.. so if it's an overheat issue it should show up on the way home. Although I know fuel pumps can also act up in the heat. But a code would tell me what's up.

RE: Generator question

I know when I got home the gen was very hot and it hadn't been running for 3 hours! I fact all the compartments were hot! I was surprised at how hot they all got. The generator is on the drivers rear behind the axle. And it pulls in air from the bottom. If overheating ends up being the problem, I'm thinking I may try and make some type of air intake that pulls the sir in from the side. Always fun learning all the little quirks of a new RV!

RE: Generator question

Yep. I’m thinking maybe a fuel pump or something like that. But I need it to act up to diagnose it.

RE: Generator question

Thanks. I went through the manual last night. So I am up to speed on what to do if a problem comes up. I did check for codes but had none. I did drain a bit of oil out. It was to the top of the full mark on the stick when cold. When I checked it hot initially it was to the top of the opening. It looks like they want it to the full mark when hot. As of right now it’s running fine. So we will have to see how it goes on the next trip. That’s the only issue is when it happens I’m on the road. I may grab a fuel pump so I have it with me. It sounds like the pumps are an issue. Someone asked the hours, it has 316 on it. Has a new filter and fresh oil before I bought it. Not sure on the plug. But knowing how the previous owner was meticulous in the maintenance I’m sure it was done.

RE: What are my vehicle s limits

Look for a trailer with a dry weight of no more than 5500 lbs.

RE: Traveling without a car

I couldn’t imagine traveling without a car. No need to wonder how to see the sights and where to park a MH. Always have your own car to do when and what you want. You always have a back up IF something happens to the MH. There are just to many pluses to have a toad than to not have one. And this is not meant o bash, but if a person cannot hookup a towbar then they should not be driving a 15,000lb plus RV! This is just my opinion and maybe it will come back and bite me in 20 years, but that’s what I think!

RE: Electric Lawnmowers

My next unnecessary purchase is going to be an electric leaf blower! However I will draw the line at a lawnmower LOL!

RE: Generator question

Thanks again guys. I only have the on/off switch which is supposed to flash a code. The gen hour meter has no lights other than backlighting. I did come across a few similar complaints and they pointed to an improper dipstick causing to read properly but be overfilled. I haven’t verified that yet! Although the oil level is just below the top of the opening for the dipstick. I did notice the one time it died I hit a dip In the road.

RE: Generator question

That’s what I’m thinking too, overheat. But I don’t have a panel that would show codes, just an on/off switch behind the cover. What would show codes?

Generator question

I’m thinking I know the answer but still have to look at the owners manual. Just got back from our first trip. Cummins Onan 5500 gas generator. The trip there was no problem. Generator ran fine the entire 7 hours it was on. On the way home it shut off 2 hours into the trip, I noticed when it started to get warm inside. Started it back up and it took a couple times but it started. Ran for about 45 minutes then died again. It was 90 degrees on the way home. The trip there wasn’t as warm and it rained for the first 2 hours. I’m thinking it got hot and shut down. When I got home I checked the oil level and it was full. I ran it for 2 hours in the driveway and it ran fine. So a couple thing I think it could be. it got hot and shut down to protect itself. The fuel was boiling due to the heat. Or what I actually did find was the altitude setting was at zero feet. We are around 900 feet where we live. Is it possible being at zero in high temps would cause it to shut down? I know it’s a long shot but it’s the only thing I found. Im still leaning towards vapor lock. Thanks!

RE: Switch to houseboat?

$50 a night is about on the high end of average! You can find cheaper out there but you are going to get cheaper! And if you’ve ever owned a boat, you are not going to save any money!

RE: Another hot water heater question

From my experience, if it’s a DSI it also has a 110V heating element. If there is a breaker in the box for it it would have a heating element. Do you have a pic of the outside of the heater?

RE: Should I tow my Grand Cherokee or get something lighter?

I tow a 13 Explorer with a 2012 Georgetown. Does just fine. Yes I’m at max but I have no issues! I’m sure you’ll be good with the GC provided you have the proper transfer case!

RE: Will my load limit handle this

F150 with flex fuel doesn’t tell us anything. What kind of F150 is it?

RE: Tow Dolly Weight

Just curious if you are asking for how much weight a dolly can supoort? As in load rating of the tow dolly axle. If that’s the case then I would guess you’ll be OK at 2000-2500lbs!

RE: I asked for trouble and I got it.

time for a second garage to check it over. seems like a lot of money for some of the items. why change a fuel pump thats doing a good job? Because it’s required! The lines where the pump connects will be rusty too. And even if you can get it apart do you really want to not install a New pump at that point. I replaced mine on my Excursion at 75k miles when I replaced the hitch. It’s smart to do!

RE: I asked for trouble and I got it.

Sounds about right! I would recommend replacing all the brake lines along with he fuel lines. Go all stainless so you never have to worry about it again! With that said, what else is so rusty on it that may fail? Maybe the rear spring shackles? Some frames can rust through. Might be time to start looking into a newer truck!
