I looked at the Propex heaters and I think the best option if we were planning to do winter camping, but for now just looking to extend late summer into fall. We also considered the Dickson Newport which is very cool and seems like a safe option for wood-stove like ambience, but we also were not sure about how and where to best install it.

8 to 10 weeks is what we were originally told as “normal”. But apparently orders are up this year, possibly due to stimulus checks making their way to contractors and then being converted into new trucks - one theory anyway. From banter on the ford truck forums it does sound like some orders are being built sooner than others, maybe due to different cab/chassis configurations and trim levels.

RE: Traveling without Jacks - contingency plan?

I’m just kicking the idea of leaving them home around a bit, but there are a couple of reasons why. Yes, this is in regards to my 1965 Avion with manual jacks. First is weight, the 4 jacks with tripod bases and extensions come in around 150lbs. Second is that when traveling they are the widest protrusions on the camper itself, however obviously not wider than the trucks mirrors. They are rotated up when traveling like ticki describes, which makes them less likely to catch on anything than those that are fixed vertically. Third is that is that we don’t expect to de-mount the camper during typical use, the only use they would get might be to act as stabilizers at a campsite. Posting here was to see what others are doing, so far sounds like they should go with us. Someplace online I’ve seen references to renting jacks if needed, but I am not sure what I might find as a typical thing to rent that could do the job? Thanks for sharing your experience on this,

It’s been pretty quiet on this thread during winter hibernation, but we have been making steady progress on our Avion. Electric, water, and drain lines are now pretty much done including new custom fabricated Black and Grey tanks. North/South bed conversion is built, and now my wife is staining and varnishing the new parts. New cab-over mattress and dinette foam purchased, along with fabric for upholstery covers so there’s a lot of sewing coming soon. Propane lines almost done and just I bought a Wave 3 heater that I plan to mount to the inside of a cabinet door similar to 67avion’s. I struggle with posting photos on this forum, but photos and more detail are posted on my blog at the link below. flyte63 blog Anyone else making any progress?

Traveling without Jacks - contingency plan?

For those that travel without jacks mounted on the their slide-in truck campers, do you have a contingency plan for how to get the camper off the truck if needed unexpectedly?

I don’t have a tracking number yet but dealer said to expect as long as 24 weeks, so we are thinking might not be until August 1st.

Wave 3 Heater - old version vs. new version

Does anyone have any experience with the current version of the Camco Olympic Wave 3 Heater compared to the previous version? Both are currently avail for purchase online, new version has been out maybe a year or two. The new version has the Control Knob and starter button on the left and right (opposite edges), the older version has the Control Knob and starter button on the front panel. I’m wondering if anyone has experience using both versions and has noticed other any other differences between them? Thanks for your help!

Did you do it - Boles Aero? I’ve seen a few at TCT rally’s in NY State, but I think more common at vintage events on the west coast. I believe they are well built and were considered a premium trailer, as was Avion.

Thanks for your inputs, I know there are a lot of variables that affect MPG but I was interested to hear about any truck camper experience with the new 7.3 engine. Planning to order a custom build F350 soon and spec’d the way that I want the cost difference in the engines is only $1000. Initially I was scared off from it with it being new and expecting it would have lower MPG, but given that owners are reporting highway milage is basically the same as the old 6.2 I think the 7.3 might be the right choice.

Ford 6.2 gas vs 7.3 gas highway gas milage

Anyone have real world HIGHWAY gas milage figures for a Ford Super Duty with about 3000lbs of truck camper in the bed? I’m specifically wondering about 2017-2021 F250 and F350 trucks with the 6.2 gas and new 7.3 gas engines. Reading online I see claims of similar or maybe only 1mpg less with the new 7.3 gas engine, but what about in the real world? (I know they have their place, but not interested Diesel numbers)

I have a bag of Olympic rivets that I think just came from Amazon. I’ve been using a Dremel to shave the heads which has worked ok for a small number to do them by hand. If you go with Olympic rivets don’t get the ones with the rubber washer, I read online that the rubber fails after 5 years so then they leak.

Probably was a Thetford valve, I think the flanges are larger size square than the Now more common Valterra ones. You can get Thetford stuff, but I think it will cost more and harder to get parts as time goes on.

Thanks tickie and D1, it’s good to hear some verified weights. We’ve been using 3000lbs as our estimated ready to camp weight and it sounds like it might be fairly valid max working number for our C-10. With the mention of old brochures I hunted through a 1965 one that came with our C-10, it states 1769lbs for the C-10 and 1640 for the 8 1/2 (unicorn). Our camper is an early one (#000045) with fiberglass insulation and not the foam insulation that is in most which may explain the slightly lower weight in the early brochure. The idea that foam insulation can gain significant weight from leaks is pretty real. I used to race small one design sailboats with similar foam inside their hulls. We found that hulls could weigh between 120lbs and 180lbs, a 60lb difference in 14’ boats that came out of the same mold - and yes the heavy ones were always damp inside.

Have any of you fellow Avion C-10 or C-11 owners had your campers on scale to get an actual weight? Looking around the internet I see numbers ranging from 1800lbs to 3000lbs but it’s hard to know what’s real. Obviously there will differences between the 10’s and 11’s and dry vs. loaded with full tanks, but any verified numbers?

I have not taken any interior skin off of ours either, have only pulled it back in the original 12v fuse box area. I have seen the ground stud for the 110v system. I replaced the 110v 30 amp Inlet and that stud was accessible when the old inlet was removed. I don’t believe that there was a 12v ground also wired to that same stud as Joe mentioned, but it’s possible.

Hi ticki, I have not found a place where the outer skin or aluminum frame is specifically bonded to the 12v ground. However on my ‘65 the Ground Wire of the pigtail coming from the truck is wired to the 12v house White negative line inside the front wall below the old screw-in fuse box. While I was in there I added a new ground stud (bolt) to the aluminum frame next to where the pigtail comes in so that I have someplace good to ground to. I also added switch plate sized access panel In that area so I don’t have to pull the inside skin off to get at that area next time.

RE: XM Radio / NAV Antenna Question

While shopping for a 2020 F-250 we noticed two black parts n the top rear edge of the cab that appear to be The GPS Navigation Antenna and a Sirius XM antenna. Because of this location it seams like both would be severely impacted by a cab-over camper. Are there any 2020 Ford Super Duty owners who can chime in regarding real world experience with Nav and Sat radio performance when traveling with their camper? Thanks!
