RE: US 312 in Tn

From Maryville to Townsend it is a wonderful dual lane road for the most part. Just before Townsend area there are about 2 - 3 miles that is single lane still with a few decent curves (35mph) but not that bad. Coming out of Townsend, you enter a steep grade with multiple tightish curves. This is the worse section but doable if you don't mind typical single lane mountain roads. Once in Wear Valley it straightens back out for a few miles. Then it gets a bit curvey and hills again the last few miles into Pigeon Forge. Haven't driven from Lenoir City to Maryville but should be a decent dual lane road the entire way. If you want an alternative, suggest 321 to Maryville then 411 to 441 into Pigeon Forge. The worse section of this route will be 411 which is a pretty straight and flat single lane road. Everything else will be dual lane.

RE: Road with uneven surfaces.......

Use something like Torklift Stable Loads lowers to have the overload springs engage sooner and then also let some of the air out of the bags. You need the truck to settle a little when you put the camper on to have enough pressure on the spring packs. Over inflating the air bags is a common mistake.

RE: Western Washington to Nashville

I like Ken56 suggestion as I80 should be fine by mid April. Even if there is a late snow it shouldn't affect the road conditions for very long. As far as Florida, that would be 1 day of travel in both directions so IMO not worth all the extra driving. If you want entertainment, look into Pigeon Forge and Dollywood. That is only about 4 hours east of Nashville.

I will offer two options and recommend you do a virtual drive on Google Maps of both to figure out which you prefer. Take James Island Connector (hwy 30) and turn left on Folly Road. Right on Camp Road. Right on Riverland Drive. Left into the park. Biggest problem with this route is the right turn onto Camp Road as it would be tight. Take James Island Connector (hwy 30) and turn left on Folly Road. Right on George L Griffith Road. Right on Riverland Road. Left into park. I do not recommend using Central Park Rd because of the left onto Riverland which is usually bad enough in a car but can be done with RVs as I see them all the time, just takes patience. Also will warn that at above normal high tides, the road does flood with salt water but not to the point it can't be driven. Riverland Dr has a bad reputation which is deserved to the drivers not paying attention. The old large oak trees have the scars to prove it. However, if you pay attention, don't ride the white line and you will be fine.

Here is the 3 step design. With a wobble stopper, the steps are very sturdy. The design could be better implemented for the fixed portion, but it was the scrap laying around which made the hieght work out the same. Each step is only about 8-3/4" so easy to go up and down.

The problem is the angle stays the same as the steps are expanded/contracted and is totally independent of the angle in relationship to the platform. I've tried to think of a solution that would keep the angle the same but haven't figured out one that would still allow the steps to be expanded/contracted. My solution was a 2-step flip down design which I later changed to a 3-step design. The 2 step was 11" each step but allowed the rear door to be opened with the steps flipped up and was held up by it's own weight. The 3 step design was necessary with a newer truck which was 3" taller and held up with two springs, only problem being that it blocks the door so must be flipped down to enter the camper. Both were mounted on a simple 18" hitch extension because my camper stops at the back of my bumper. However, I wouldn't have a hesitation to put it on a slightly longer extension for a 9-6" camper. Here are the pics of the 2 step design. RE: Aluminum Frame vs Wood Frame for washboard roads.

One big advantage to wood with aluminum skin, the average handyman can take the skin off, repair the wood to as good as new and then replace the skin. Even if you can get to the aluminum, it takes special skills and tools to do a repair.

Was there any justification given for closing/giving away Big Hart? It seemed pretty busy to me. COE releasing control of a park happens for a number of reasons. Two biggest is budget short fall and/or local authorities wish to take control. From this article, it seems it was a combination of the two. McDuffe County to Operate . . . I do know I recently traveled through South Dakota and the state took over all of the COE parks when there was budget cuts years ago. Instead of letting the COE close the parks for a while, they took over the operations. Today South Dakota has some very nice state park campgrounds.

Just a little more info on Petersburg. Most of the sites are very big and will easily accommodate both a large rig and extra vehicle towing your boat. If you want to leave it in the water, recommend sites 25-27 as it is back in a cove protected from waves and the beach is sandy (just make sure it is near full pond). If you would rather have a breeze, stay out in 42 or such. Can't pull you boat onto shore on most of the sites but you could anchor just off shore or trailer the 1/4 mile to the boat landing in the campground. I'm was in 42 last visit and can see 4 different directions to go from here.

Check out Petersburg for Strom Thurmond (Still called Clarks Hill on the GA side). Most of the sites are on the water. Most convienent for running into town to eat or get supplies. Modoc isn't as nice, but still a good park and will put you further up the lake giving you more choices. For Hartwell, recommend Watsadler. These are wonderful sites on the water though the only problem is you are near the dam so it's only one way to go. Twin Lakes is nice if you can get out on the point where the outer loop sites are on the water, but otherwise most sites aren't on the water.

I've been on all the roads mentioned lots of times over the past 50 years. The 441S will be the flatest, straightest and quickest to least scary of them all. How far you take it depends on how much you want to avoid Atlanta.

RE: Dometic Compressor Fridge Issue

Kohidad, since my freezer gets to -13 degrees (which I think is well below what it should be)do you think it would still be a problem with the fan and outside coils? Everything looks clean (I keep the coils clear with compressed air) and warm air is being moved by the fan when the compressor is on. It seems the ability to cool gets stopped somewhere between the freezer and fridge. Clean coils and the fan moving air seems to be the outside common issues are okay. By chance has the ventilation for the air to/from the compressor area been blocked by something? The coils are a single loop so if the freezer is getting cold, the freon is still getting to the fridge compartment. Otherwise nothing would work if there is a blockage not to mention it would be very unusual. How are you checking the temperature? Have you ever checked the temps before? Are you checking them in the same way? If not this is something you may not have noticed.

Even in Az there is going to be a decent mount of water damage in the unit from it being open. Adds are several years. If there is any delamination in the skin, looks like it in the picture with the jack, means you will have to take the skin off and possibly replace it since it won't come off in one piece. If you want to take the time and have the tools, would probably be a good cheap to get it to being a useable camper. The Apenlite was a quality rig when it was made. Gray and black water tanks are small at 10 gallons each but the water tank is a nice 33 gal. I think the offer of $250 or just hauling it off for them is a good place to start. Figure new ac, new roof, new vents and then hope the water lines are good. Figure a useable camper of the same size type is only worth $5000-$7000.

I believe the fan Old-biscuit is referring to is the fan on the coils in the rear outside of the unit. The fan removes the heat from the oustide coil. If the outside coil is not being cooled sufficiently, the unit can't provide enough cooling to design specs. The result is the freezer uses up all of the cold and the refrigerator stays warmer than normal.

RE: Sewer hose?

Rhino Hose collapses, two fit in the standard RV rear bumper. If the pipe goes the with of the camper ( most do) and your only getting 5 foot of waste hose in, something is wrong. Is it binding up or is something else in there? How did you mount it? Is it hitting a screw? Lance truck camper compartment is in the rear and only about 20" deep. I have the same itty bitty compartment on mine so know what the author is talking about.

Air operated are prone to leaks and you won't know you have a leak until it won't work. Cable operated are very reliable but you have to run that cable just right for it to work and it could get snagged. Electric operated are vey dependable, wires are easy to run in a protected way. This would be my choice. Generally, the limited slip device goes in the rear first since that is where most of the weight is located. If you have a device in the rear, than the front makes sense. However, before I spent the money on a locker I would invest in a good winch for the front and then learn how to use it by praticing and taking a class if need be. Not only would the winch help you out more than a locker, but it will also benefit any others you run across.

I use to carry an 5' hose which just squeezed into the compartment. Then I looked and noticed there was just enough room to mount a sewer hose carrier across the back of the camper. Now I can carry a single 10' hose which has worked every place I've stopped. Occasionally we stretch it real tight so my wife has to hold the one end in the dump while I pull the valves, but otherwise no issues.

That seal is just a cosmetic trim piece. Remove it and the glass will still be there. I've had mine out a few times. If you are worried about it, take it out, start at the bottom to make sure you have a good fit, then work it around so the gap is at the top. Just make sure not to stretch the seal when you put it back in. You do need to make sure the weep holes aren't clogged though. Also, the caulking around the outside of the window is more cosmetic and only provides sealing until it shrinks or cracks. The true seal is the putty between the camper and the window. What usually happens is they cut the window opening a bit on the large size so that when the window is put in place, there is very little overlap at the top. When you put the window back in, make sure to shim it up so the window is cengtered in the opening.

YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NEED A DC-DC CHARGER ! Prove it to yourself. Start your truck. Check the voltage at the battery. Immediately after starting it should >13.8V. Let the truck idle for about 10 minutes and check the voltage again. Probably <13.2V ! Have some one hold the engine at a high idle. I'll bet it is still <13.4 ! 13.2V - 13.4V at your house battery bank will not let it discharge but it will NOT re-charge the house battery bank ! I don't need one but would like to have one for faster charging. My truck will recharge my battery faster than 10a/hr even when running the fridge on 12V. Now I did upgrade the wiring from the truck battery to within 10" of the camper battery to #2 and go through a 175A Anderson connector which helps greatly. Most modern alternators have over 75% capacity at idle. The old days of having to rev the engine for a good charge are gone. At idle, my alternator turns 3,000rpm thanks to pulley size which is 90% of it's 220A capacity so has plenty of output at idle. Now, I would like one so I can recharge a dual battery bank at 40A/hr when I upgrade my next camper to a DC compressor fridge as I hope to sit more and drive less.

RE: Effect of weight on braking for trucks.

I compensate by slowing down when loaded. My top speed is always under 65mph even when traveling out west where the speed limit was 80. I'm usually running about 62 interstate and 57 on the main secondary roads. If traffic backs up behind, I'll find some place to pull over to let it clear. Though on a recent 9,000 mile trip, I think I only had to pull over dozen times and never on the interstate. I usually let off the throttle and coast or down shift when stopping. On my 2004 diesel with manual transmission, at 150,000 miles my front brakes were still had 50% pad left despite hauling the TC for 50,000 miles and a 12,000# trailer for over 20,000 miles. Rear brakes had almost no sign of wear. On my current gas truck with auto, I have 105,000 miles of which 65,000 miles were carrying the camper. Front brakes are about 40% remaining, rears are hardly worn. By taking it easy and down shifting, I usually only need light braking. Even coming down the Beartooth I only had to use the brakes for the switchbakes. Same coming down 14 on the east side of the Big Horns.
