Fuel injector hose leak on Monaco with Cummins engine

One of the worst things that can happen if you're driving down the road in a class A motorcoach is to smell diesel fuel. it's happened to us twice and both times a crack or hole appeared in the fuel injector hose and sprayed diesel fuel all over the engine. We recently pulled into an RV park in Hot Springs Arkansas smelled diesel fuel went to the back it was dripping all over the ground all over our tow car & the back of the rig. With the engine shut off I called Good Sam road service and they said they were had to call 911 and dispatch fire engines. I said no you don't need to do that everything is OK now. he said don't dare start the engine I asked for a mobile mechanic and they said there were none. they were going to tow the rig in. I said there's no way you could get a tow truck up here so I had to cancel the dispatch. The RV park was irritated that we were blocking the entrance and said why don't you just start it, run it over to your space and then worry about it. I said no it could cause a fire and I refused. I then opened the back of the engine compartment, had my wife start the engine for about 5 seconds and could see right away where the fuelspray was coming from. Then went to an O'reilly's auto parts matched up the 5/16th gate's hose 4219bf and I cut out the part that was cracked, went to home depot got a 5/16th double end barb hose splicer # bhb-201anlb. And 2 small hose clamps. It was a messy job but I cut out the bad part spliced the fuel hose and it's working fine now to allow us to get home. It's all a dangerous situation but we felt helpless and nobody would assist.

RE: RV parts shortages

I just found out this morning that Delco Remy has a great website and you can search for any part by number and it was able to give me Revised part numbers, whether they're available or not and if it's obsolete it suggests replacement starters for the cummina engine. Even better there's a number you can call for technical assistance and the guy I talked with was whiz. he said rather than trying to find that old part, I can upgrade to a new starter with solenoid that only weighs 35 pounds instead of the 65 pound part that's in there now and it's covered by a 3 year warranty I called freightliner and they had 5 of those on the shelf in Springfield Missouri. part number 8200433. This replaces the old clunker starter on my 6C 8.3 cummins engine and now has a warranty. Cost about $370 for the whole unit.

RV parts shortages

I had a part expert at Cummins tell me the other day at the reason there are so few RV parts available is because of covid and a shortage of shipping containers. I spent all day last week trying to find a couple of parts for our Monaco dynasty Cummins engine that was having trouble starting I called Cummins in Fort Worth looking for a fuel cut off solenoid. He had no idea what part number it was. said he couldn't even order it unless I knew the number. Fortunately I had a receipt years ago from when I got replaced it from Cummins in Salt Lake City. I gave him the part number. he said there were no more of them in the United States but only one in Belgium and it would take weeks to get. then I call Cummins in Arizona, where we have our rig serviced and he said sure we have him here and I see them at a lot of places around the country so the 1st problem is with the databases that these companies used to search for parts. Other problem is knowing who put the part on. I tried to get a solonoid for the starter for our engine. Cummins said they had no idea who put it on, Even though it had a Cummins label on it. I crawled under the rig got a bunch of numbers off the starter and solonoid and came to find out that it was made for Cunningham by Delco Ramey, and the part number had been changed. I tried to order a part through freightliner and he said there is none in the United States that have to get it from the factory I said can they overnight it? He said they don't overnight out headquarters So I ended up just cleaning the solenoid contacts. Everyone has their own stories but parts on older coaches. Ours is 1998, are tough.

RE: Cummins engine barely starts

Thanks to all for your help.A diesel mechanic came to the unit this morning said the batteries are sufficient although old. He recommends cleaning the terminals he thinks the starter solonoid is going out because there's a slight hesitation when engaging the starter. I have a call into Cummins to see if they have a solenoid or starter so I can have the whole package put on there I appreciate everybody's help.

Cummins engine barely starts

Years ago we had an issue with a fuel cut off solonoid for our Cummins engine model 6C 8.3. It would it be difficult to start and I replaced the solonoid and it would start right away. now when we got to Fort Worth the engine would not start and barely kick over. Cranking very slow.. after 2 hours we got it to start and I'm wondering if it's just a bad engine battery. I did couple the coach batteries together with the engine battery and it's still kicked over very slow . We have a mobile mechanic coming tomorrow and I'm wondering if it sounds just like a bad engine battery. Voltage reads 12.8 in the coach but that could be a a surface charge. Any thoughts? It's been hard to start for a while, never kicking over fast. I hope it's not a sticky cutoff solonoid because there are none left in the US!

Has anybody installed a GPS screen in the Back Up Camera

Hi all, We have a 1998 Monaco Dynasty and I got the idea of installing a nice Garmin GPS screen where the huge black and white camera display is on the front panel. I called the audio place and they didn't think the back up camera would work with a new kenwood stereo and garmin gps. it includes an option of a back up camera but they said it would have to be mounted down near the bumper. He suggested I start with trying to get a color back up camera installed first. Perhaps if it worked with the right fittings, they could adapt it to the Kenwood system. My easy idea is spirally down. Has anybody successfully replaced the ancient black an white screen with some nifty navigation system with screen and figured out how to use the back up camera? The audio place thought the camera might have rca style inputs for sound and video. Thanks
